Ultrasound Liver Disease Diagnosis by SimonMed and Siemens Healthineers

What if the solution to reversing a life-threatening disease was just one screening away? That’s the reality SimonMed Imaging and Siemens Healthineers are striving to make possible as they tackle the stealthy rise of liver disease with innovative ultrasound technology.

Want to know how a collaboration between SimonMed Imaging and Siemens Healthineers is handling the stealthy rise of liver disease with game-changing ultrasound technology that promises early detection of liver diseases and a brighter future for millions of people?

On January 15, 2025, SimonMed Imaging, one of the largest outpatient imaging service providers in the United States, announced a strategic collaboration with Siemens Healthineers, a global leader in medical technology. This collaboration aims to address the growing burden of life-threatening liver diseases.

The partnership involves the integration of Siemens’ advanced ACUSON Sequoia ultrasound systems into multiple SimonMed locations across the U.S. to enhance the diagnosis and early detection of liver diseases.

The technology focuses on a noninvasive, quantitative approach to assessing ultrasound-derived Fat Fraction (UDFF), a tool designed to detect early-stage liver conditions such as metabolic-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).

Transforming Liver Disease Diagnosis:

“Increased fat in the liver is mostly

asymptomatic and may progress to steatohepatitis, fibrosis, and cirrhosis,” stated Dr. John Simon, MD, CEO and Founder of SimonMed.

Although imaging plays an essential role in diagnosing fatty liver disease, traditional methods can be subjective. The integration of a personalized, accurate, and quantitative early detection screening with UDFF aims to help initiate timely treatment and prevent chronic liver disease.

The ACUSON Sequoia system offers a comprehensive liver assessment in a single acquisition. It quantifies both liver tissue stiffness and hepatic fat. This streamlined approach aims to support patient care pathways and can potentially reduce the need for invasive interventions. Locations that are now equipped with the ACUSON Sequoia include SimonMed facilities in Litchfield, Apache Junction, and Laveen, Arizona, as well as Centennial and Southwest in Nevada.

Addressing the Silent Epidemic:

Liver diseases most often develop silently, without any apparent symptoms, which complicates early detection and increases the risk of severe outcomes. According to the American Liver Foundation, approximately 100 million Americans live with MASLD, yet fewer than 5% of them are aware of their condition. Early detection and intervention are critical, as liver disease is often reversible when identified in its initial stages.

UDFF provides an accessible and cost-effective alternative to traditional magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (MRI PDFF) and offers similar clinical utility at a fraction of the cost. This accessibility is expected to expand the reach of effective screening, which enables earlier diagnosis and treatment for millions of at-risk patients.

Collaboration for Better Outcomes:

“We are proud to be working with SimonMed, who are committed to addressing the growing burden of liver disease,” said Travis Holles, head of the Americas for Siemens Healthineers Ultrasound business.

This partnership exemplifies how technological innovation and collaboration can drive significant improvements in patient outcomes. The ACUSON Sequoia systems empower clinicians with precise, noninvasive tools for early detection, paving the way for enhanced care strategies.

A Milestone in Liver Healthcare:

The implementation of advanced ultrasound systems marks a significant milestone for both SimonMed and Siemens Healthineers. It reflects a shared commitment to advancing liver healthcare through innovation and accessibility. As liver diseases continue affecting a substantial portion of the population, initiatives like this offer hope for improved detection, prevention, and management.

This partnership aligns with the broader goals of the healthcare industry by leveraging technology to provide patient-centered care and address critical public health challenges. With expanding access to state-of-art diagnostic tools, SimonMed and Siemens Healthineers are setting a new standard for liver disease screening and management.
