I have spent my entire life in Biotech sector and thus I can give you a first-hand correct picture of this industry. I am going to write the truth in next few para’s and not going to show you a very rosy picture unless you are ready to dive deeper into the world of BioSciences

In this article, I am not just going to enumerate what is the scope of Biotechnology in India & Abroad.

For convenience we can divide this article into following Top 10 questions:

  1. What is the scope of Biotechnology after B.Sc
  2. What is the scope of Biotechnology after B.Tech
  3. What is the scope of Biotechnology after M.Sc
  4. What is the scope of Biotechnology after M.Tech
  5. What is the scope of Biotechnology after Ph.D
  6. What is the scope of life Sciences in Academics
  7. What is the scope of Biotech research
  8. What is the scope of Biotech Sales
  9. What is the scope at the frontiers of Bio-Pharma
  10. What is the scope of MBA after a Biotech Degree

Each point above is an article in itself, however, I will try to capture every aspect in detail.

  1. Scope After B.Sc: So if you are one of those unsatisfied souls looking for a Job immediately after B.Sc in BioSciences then you will end up getting low paying Junior level jobs which are not at all advisable. My advice to you would be Pursue a masters degree.
  2. Scope After B.Tech: Getting an engineering degree in Biotech helps you stand out from the crowd of B.Sc’s and you are equivalent to an M.Sc degree holder for sure but you have your own inherent problems. As a B.Tech / BE degree holder you have 2 Options:
    1. Go for Higher Studies: M.tech, MS or Direct PhD
    2. Go for an MBA and enter the world of Business Development, Marketing & Sales
    3. You cannot go for a Teaching / Academic Job with a bachelors degree.
  3. Scope After M.Sc: If you are a Masters degree holder in BioSciences, you are eligible for most of the Research Jobs but a preference is given to candidates who have qualified any of the national level entrance exams like CSIR NET, GATE, DBT BET, ICMR JRF, ARS NET. However, do not get demotivated you still have a lot of scope without them. You have the following top options after M.Sc in Biotech:
    1. Go for a Ph.D
    2. Apply for a Corporate Research job and start climbing the corporate ladder ( this part is tougher than the entrance exams mentioned above )
    3. Go for Teaching / Academic Job
    4. Get into Marketing & Business Development
    5. Get into MBA ( NB: MBA’s are the most unemployed degree holders in our country, so tread with caution )
  4. Scope After M.Tech: The scope in BT sector after an M.Tech is more or less same as M.Sc / PhD. You get easily absorbed in Job which requires your specialized skill set and you can always go for higher studies, Sales & BD or Teaching as a career
  5. Scope After Ph.D.: If you have a Ph.D. degree, then it depends on the following parameters:
    • Parameters:
      • What was your Ph.D. Topic
      • Have you qualified any National level exam or not?
      • From here you did your Ph.D.?
      • What is the skill set you possess?
      • Will the R&D companies be interested in your Research work?
      • Can your skill set be used in the Industry?
    • What you can do after Ph.D. in BioSciences: If you have the answers to all your questions mentioned above then you have a good news, yes you are employable but its a matter of time while you get your job. You can move up the ladder in following directions:
      • Research Scientist in any Fortune 500 Biotech, Pharma or FMCG company
      • Post Doc Researcher: In India or Abroad
      • Academics: Assistant Professor / Professor etc
      • Sales & Marketing: You can head the entire S& M of any company if you have the right IQ and mindset.
  6. The scope of Biotech in Academics / Teaching: Teaching is the noblest of all professions and must be undertaken by the smartest of souls in the industry. If you have the right understanding of the subject and you think you can ignite the flame of Research in your students then go for it. You will excel.
  7. The Scope of Biotech Research: I am not going to give you any shiny promises. You want to get into research jobs, enter only after your Ph.D., it has huge cope with high paying salaries but your Ph.D. must be in a relevant field and your IQ must match up with industry standards.
  8. The Scope of Biotech Sales & Business Development: It’s a simple field, you are good in communications, have an excellent understanding of consumer behavior as well as B2B business development, then you can nail this. Again my advice is to enter this only after your master’s degree.
  9. Scope in BioPharma Industry: This is an evergreen industry and getting into QA/QC jobs or F&D jobs is one of the best options you have got.
  10. The scope of MBA after a Biotech Degree: You really do not need an MBA degree after a Masters in Biotech / BioSciences / Life Sciences and I have covered this in another article.
