Position Overview

The Associate – Microbiology is responsible for performing microbiological testing, laboratory operations, and quality control activities to ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLP). The role supports the production of safe and effective pharmaceutical products through accurate testing, documentation, data analysis, and adherence to regulatory standards. The associate works under the guidance of supervisors while contributing to laboratory efficiency, quality assurance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assists in the preparation and maintenance of microbiological media stocks, including sterilization of laboratory accessories using autoclave cycles.
  • Manages the receipt, storage, and handling of BioBall cultures and supports the maintenance of master cultures and preparation of cryovials.
  • Performs routine microbiological analyses, including water testing, Microbial Limit Tests (MLT), Sterility Testing, Bacterial Endotoxin Tests (BET), Container Closure Integrity Testing (CCIT), and microbial challenge studies.
  • Conducts sampling, labeling, and verification of materials, laboratory equipment, and analytical instruments according to established procedures.
  • Interprets and evaluates analytical data for accuracy, precision, trends, and potential cGMP impact, recommending appropriate corrective and preventive actions when required.
  • Maintains accurate laboratory documentation and quality records in compliance with GMP, GLP, and regulatory requirements.
  • Reviews, updates, and revises Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), analytical methods, and related laboratory documentation.
  • Performs quality control analyses on finished products, raw materials, and packaging components.
  • Enters, reviews, and approves laboratory data within computerized quality management systems and generates Environmental Monitoring System (EMS) reports.
  • Maintains training records to ensure personnel competency and compliance with laboratory qualification requirements.
  • Supports project execution by planning work activities, managing priorities, and meeting established timelines under supervisory guidance.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to ensure laboratory operations meet quality, safety, and compliance standards.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant scientific discipline, or
  • Associate’s degree with four years of relevant laboratory experience, or
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) with six years of relevant laboratory experience.

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of microbiological laboratory techniques and quality control testing.
  • Experience in microbiological analyses, including water testing, sterility testing, microbial limit testing, bacterial endotoxin testing, CCIT, and environmental monitoring.
  • Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), Good Laboratory Practices (GLP), and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to interpret pharmacopeial methods, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), technical documents, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Proficiency in laboratory instrumentation, sample management, data interpretation, and computerized laboratory systems.
  • Strong documentation practices and regulatory compliance awareness.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience with analytical laboratory techniques, particularly High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC).
  • Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing principles, Six Sigma methodologies, and statistical analysis.
  • Experience leading or contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Familiarity with Environmental Monitoring Systems (EMS) and computerized laboratory databases.
  • Experience using AI-powered productivity tools such as ChatGPT or Microsoft Copilot while adhering to responsible AI practices and ethical guidelines.
