Overview

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) invites applications from Indian Nationals and Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs) for faculty positions at the levels of:

  • Professor
  • Associate Professor
  • Assistant Professor

Position 1: Professor

Pay Scale: Academic Pay Level – 14, ₹1,44,200 – ₹2,18,200

Essential Qualifications: A candidate must satisfy either Category A or Category B.

Category A
Academic and Research Requirements

  • Ph.D. degree in the concerned, allied, or relevant discipline.
  • Recognized as an eminent scholar.
  • Published work of high quality.
  • Active engagement in research.

Minimum of 10 research publications in peer-reviewed journals or journals indexed in:

  • Scopus
  • Web of Science
  • JAI (JNU Academic Index)

as per the list available on the JNU website.

Total Research Score of 120 as per Appendix II, Table 2 of UGC Regulations, 2018.

Teaching and Research Experience

  • Minimum of 10 years of teaching experience as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor in a University/College.

OR

  • Equivalent research experience at University/National Level Institutions.
  • Evidence of successfully guiding doctoral candidates.

Category B

An outstanding professional who:

  • Holds a Ph.D. degree in relevant, allied, or applied disciplines.
  • Is from academia (outside Category A institutions) or industry.
  • Has made significant contributions to knowledge in the relevant discipline.

  • Possesses a minimum of 10 years of experience.

Position 2: Associate Professor

  • Good academic record.
  • Ph.D. degree in the concerned, allied, or relevant discipline.

Essential Qualifications for Faculty Recruitment

Academic Qualification

  • Master’s Degree with at least 55% marks (or equivalent grade in a point-scale wherever the grading system is followed) in a concerned, relevant, or allied subject from:
  • An Indian University, or
  • An accredited foreign university.

Eligibility Test Requirement

In addition to the above qualification, candidates must have:

  • Cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by UGC or CSIR,

OR

  • Cleared a similar test accredited by UGC such as:
  • SLET
  • SET

OR

  • Been awarded a Ph.D. degree in accordance with UGC Regulations 2009 or 2016 (and subsequent amendments), making them exempt from NET/SLET/SET requirements.

Ph.D. Candidates Registered Before 11 July 2009

Candidates who apply for Faculty Recruitment should be registered for a Ph.D. before 11 July 2009, shall be governed by the regulations existing at that time, and may be exempted from NET/SLET/SET, subject to fulfillment of the following conditions:

  1. The Ph.D. degree was awarded in regular mode.
  2. The Ph.D. thesis was evaluated by at least two external examiners.
  3. An open Ph.D. viva voce was conducted.
  4. The candidate published two research papers from Ph.D. work, with at least one appearing in a refereed journal.
  5. The candidate presented at least two papers based on Ph.D. work in conferences/seminars sponsored, funded, or supported by:
    • UGC
    • ICSSR
    • CSIR
    • Similar agencies

The fulfillment of these conditions must be certified by the Registrar or Dean (Academic Affairs) of the concerned University.

Exemption for Certain Disciplines

NET/SLET/SET shall not be required for Master’s programmes in disciplines where such examinations are not conducted by:

Application Process

  1. Eligible and interested candidates are required to apply online through the application portal available on the JNU website

    Only online applications will be accepted.

  2. Applicants must upload the following documents while submitting the application:

  3. Incomplete applications, including applications without scanned signatures or supporting documents, shall be summarily rejected. No correspondence regarding incomplete applications will be entertained.

University Rights and Reservation of Powers

  1. The University reserves the right to:
    • Draw panels for future appointments in the event of non-joining of selected candidates.
    • Conduct interviews through Online Mode, Offline Mode, or both.
    • Not fill any advertised position.

Experience and Eligibility Guidelines

  1. The period spent acquiring M.Phil. and/or Ph.D. degrees shall not be counted as teaching or research experience for appointment purposes.

    However, active service spent pursuing a research degree simultaneously with teaching assignments, without availing leave, shall be counted as teaching experience for direct recruitment or promotion.

  2. Relaxations in educational qualifications, age, and experience for reserved category candidates shall be applicable as per UGC and Government of India rules.

Reservation Guidelines

SC/ST Candidates

  1. SC/ST candidates must upload caste certificates issued by the competent authority in the format prescribed by the Government of India.

Persons with Disabilities (PwD)

  1. Candidates applying under the PwD category must upload a Disability Certificate issued by the competent authority in the prescribed Government of India format.

Eligible disabilities include:

  • Progressive disabilities
  • Non-progressive disabilities
  • Disabilities categorized as “not likely to improve”

Disabilities categorized as “likely to improve” shall not be eligible for reservation benefits.

OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)

  1. Reservation for OBC candidates shall be governed by Government of India guidelines as amended from time to time.

Candidates must:

  • Belong to the Central OBC List.
  • Upload a recent OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate issued by a competent authority.

Candidates not included in the Central OBC List are not eligible to apply against OBC-reserved posts.

If an OBC certificate is found invalid at any stage:

  • Candidature shall be cancelled.
  • Appointment, if made, shall be terminated immediately without notice.

Economically Weaker Sections (EWS)

  1. Reservation for EWS candidates shall be governed by:

Candidates must upload a valid Income and Asset Certificate issued by the competent authority.

Shortlisting and Selection

  1. Mere possession of minimum qualifications does not guarantee an interview call.

Where a large number of applications are received, the University may restrict the number of candidates shortlisted based on qualifications and experience exceeding the minimum prescribed criteria.

Government Employees and Proper Channel Requirement

  1. Candidates currently employed in Government, Autonomous Bodies, or Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs):

(a) Must upload a scanned copy of the forwarding letter/NOC through proper channel while applying.

If unavailable during application, it must be produced at the time of interview.

(b) Failure to apply through proper channel may result in:

  • Non-consideration of past service benefits.
  • Non-eligibility for pay protection.

Such benefits shall be regulated according to applicable rules.

Research Publications and Academic Score

  1. Candidates should:

(a) Carefully review eligibility criteria and upload all supporting evidence.

(b) Claim Research Scores only in accordance with UGC Regulations 2018, based on publications in refereed or other recognized journals.

  1. Eligibility regarding qualifications, experience, and publications shall be determined as on the last date of submission of online applications.

Verification and University Authority

  1. The University reserves the right to modify, withdraw, or cancel any communication made to candidates at any stage of recruitment if an inadvertent error is detected.
  2. The University may verify documents and antecedents at any stage before or after appointment.

If documents are found to be fake or information has been suppressed:

  • Candidature shall be cancelled.
  • Service shall be terminated.
