The Nature Conservancy Hiring The Nature Conservancy, seek a Project Research Fellow to provide scientific and technical support in the project to develop knowledge on freshwater biodiversity in the Upper Bhima. This position is preferably based in Pune and will require extensive travel within the basin. The position will also support the Project Lead in advancing the organization’s strategy to support freshwater, biodiversity, and human well-being outcomes. The Project Research Fellow, will be primarily responsible for contributing to scientific outputs of the initiative and assisting in project management, ensuring completion of committed deliverables on time and within budget under the guidance and supervision of the Project Lead.

Key Tasks & Deliverables
- The Project Fellow assists in advancing the freshwater ecosystem conservation initiatives under the guidance of the Project Lead. Essential functions include assisting in development of project deliverables, applied research, stakeholder engagement, drafting progress reports/presentations, and providing overall administrative oversight to all the various aspects of TNC-India’s initiative on conserving freshwater ecosystems of India. Project Fellow will work to develop and collaborate with the project team along with partner engagement by managing the reporting process, monthly calls, planning execution and follow up from meetings. This position reports to the Project Lead.
- Conduct camera trapping, vegetation sampling, freshwater biodiversity surveys, and misc. Field activities as required in the project. Candidates will also be required to analyze the data and write reports
- Supports partner engagement activities, including coordinating regular partner meetings, overseeing grant coordination, reviewing reports, and identifying challenges and opportunities in collaboration with the Project Lead.
- Organizes stakeholder consultations, workshops and other meetings as per requirements of project. Prepare agendas and minutes of the meetings. May act as a project liaison within and outside of the organization.
- Works with the Conservancy’s Communications Team and contractors to develop and disseminate various communication products related to the program.
- Periodic domestic travel; may involve infrequent international travel as per program requirements.
- Communicate findings to scientists and the public, including publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at conferences.
Time Frame
· This is a 1-year project-based consultancy assignment with TNC – India with possibility for renewal, subject to availability of suitable projects and funds, with the tentative start date as 01-Sep-23
Desired Qualification
- Master’s Degree in Freshwater science/Wildlife Science/Botany/Zoology/ Environmental Sciences and 2-3 years’ experience in research projects from the relevant field
- Experience in developing and implementing biodiversity survey plans; sound knowledge on terrestrial biodiversity and preferably, aquatic biodiversity of the Indian sub-continent and good identification skills.
- Advanced skills with GIS software, such ArcGIS/GrassGIS
- Experience with programming languages for data analysis (e.g., R, Python) and strong quantitative skills
- Familiarity with analyzing hydrological data is preferred
- Record of publishing peer-reviewed research in scientific journals
- Experience of preparing research proposals, research communications and liaising with multiple partners.
- Experience contributing to research plans and/or conservation strategy development will be viewed favorably.
- Strong writing, verbal communication, and presentation skills.
- · Strong team player who can build relationships and work collaboratively across the organization and with partners.
- Fluent in Marathi, Hindi and English.
- Go getter, quick learner and scientific temperament are desired skill sets.
- A proactive and enthusiastic approach, ability to work independently, and good interpersonal skills are essential.
- Ability to work well in a highly matrixed, decentralized and collaborative organization.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet time sensitive deadlines.
