New Secretary of DBT: IISER Professor Rajesh Gokhale

The Centre has selected Rajesh Gokhale as Secretary of the Department of Biotechnology. He will be taking over from Renu Swarup, who will be retiring on the 31st of October 2021.

The Cabinet Appointments Committee has confirmed Gokhale’s appointment as Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, for 2 years or until he reaches the age of 60.

Dr. Gokhale was the former Director of the CSIR-IGIB from 2009 to 2016 and an immunologist known for shedding new light on aspects of tuberculosis. He is currently a Professor at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Pune and was previously a senior scientist at the NII, Delhi.

Dr. Rajesh Gokhale stated that it’s a great responsibility, and he is looking forward to giving the best.

The DBT was a very pivotal department during the pandemic, especially in the development of indigenous vaccines.

Mr. Gokhale received the Infosys Life Sciences award in 2013 and was one of the few scientists at the CSIR who founded a startup biotech company as a result of a policy change in CSIR rules that allowed scientists to invest in startups.

About Dr. Rajesh Gokhale

Dr. Rajesh Gokhale was

born in 1967, and he pursued his Ph.D. from IISc and Postdoc from Stanford University, USA.

Dr. Rajesh Gokhale is well-known for his research on the metabolic diversity of pathogens. He is attributed for discovering a family of Long-chain Fatty acyl-AMP ligases, and his research contributed to the understanding of biochemical crosstalk between fatty acid synthases and polyketide synthases in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. He is also the holder of US and Indian patents for his invention, Method to Modulate Pigmentation Process in Skin Melanocytes.

In 2006, the CSIR, the Govt of India’s top scientific research agency, bestowed Dr. Rajesh Gokhale the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the most distinguished Indian science honors, for his benefactions to life sciences. In 2009, he won the National Bioscience Award for Career Development of the DBT.
