India Enters Endemic Phase From Epidemic Phase

There is a slim chance of another wave of COVID-19 with the current events reporting just the Delta & its variants and just a handful of weekly caseload along with less transmitted SARS-CoV-2, according to the professionals.

HoD of microbiology & clinical virology division, CMC (Christian Medical College), Vellore, and retired professor, Dr. T Jacob John stated that they have to take their minds off the third wave for the time being. Even if it appears, it would be by the mid of the last quarter of 2022. He further added that India’s pandemic has entered the endemic stage.

Covid task force member, Maharashtra, Dr. Shashank Joshi remarked that no one can envisage the accurate timing of the next COVID-19 wave. In case of any emergence of new variants, it cannot be suspended.

John, also the former director of the Centre of Advanced Research in Virology, ICMR claimed that the one-week average record of COVID-19 caseload has dropped below 50,000 for sixteen weeks. Since October 9th, the caseload has been under 20,000. John questioned during a video conference on Tuesday whether the pandemic is really over. He discussed computations based on the reproduction

count of the virus that possibly infected 830 million Indians for the 2nd wave and 450 million people for the 1st wave.

John mentioned that vaccination coverage of India has not been that good as per the first world nations. India has entered the endemic phase not because of vaccination, however, because of natural infection.

He said that the endemic phase does not promise the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. India is in the endemic phase for the long haul.

Joshi commented that there are sectors that have vaccination coverage and have been recording 300 to 500 cases per day for several months. It is advancing towards endemicity.
