Second Centre of Excellence in flow cytometry at CMC, Vellore

BD Life Sciences-Biosciences, a division of BD, has established its 2nd Centre of Excellence in flow cytometry for clinical research in India in association with CMC, Vellore. This Centre of Excellence will function as the National Reference Centre for clinical diagnostics applications, bringing together doctors, hematologists, and lab specialists from across the country to contemplate and address standardization and best methods in clinical flow cytometry.

This Centre of Excellence will also serve to shift the boundaries of clinical research, give opportunities for information transfer, and carry out diagnoses with more precision to obtain a quicker turnaround of reports and better patient outcomes.

Second Centre of Excellence in flow cytometry

Pavan Mocherla, MD, BD India/South Asia, stated that flow cytometry had been a precious medium in many clinical applications throughout these years. For around 120 years, CMC, Vellore has been at the forefront of healthcare and research, and it’s an honor that this Centre of Excellence in flow cytometry is a testament to its mission of improving the world of health.

CMC’s Haemato

logy department’s in-depth expertise, combined with BD’s technical progressions, will present an exceptional experience for anyone coming in for training or treatment. Their goal is to promote best practices and stay ahead of the scientific curve in order to lay a solid foundation for better patient outcomes.

Dr. Vikram Mathews, Associate Director, and Professor, Haematology, CMC, Vellore, stated that the proposed CoE in flow cytometry is another turning point in the academic partnership between the institute and BD-India. The CoE, as a cutting-edge diagnostic facility, will aid in the teaching and training of hematologists and pathologists in multicolor flow cytometry analysis.

The laboratory is one of India’s most comprehensive diagnostic flow cytometry centers, offering services such as leukemia and lymphoma diagnostics, stem cell enumeration, primary immunodeficiency disorders, lymphocyte subset analysis, paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, and cellular therapy assays.

The proposed partnership with BD-India reinforces their relationship, putting them in a better position to provide high-quality diagnostic services and academic activities in the future. It will not only improve students’ and budding pathologists’ knowledge of the domain, but it will also benefit the institute’s mandate of combining diagnostic service with current academic and research work.

This CoE is outfitted with a wide array of flow cytometer instruments such as BD Accuri C6 Plus, BD FACS Cant II, BD FACS Canto 10C, and BD FACSLyric, which will aid in raising awareness amongst healthcare experts about the role of flow cytometry in clinical diagnostics.

Puneet Talwar, Business Director-India/South Asia, BD Lifesciences- Biosciences stated that their collaboration with CMC Vellore dates back to 30 years when they provided them with their first BD FACS flow cytometry instrument. The collaboration has strengthened over the years by regularly upgrading technology and other tools/resources needed by CMC in serving its patients. A new chapter will be written in their academic collaboration with the establishment of this CoE in flow cytometry. This CoE will help in training and teaching many more pathologists and hematologists in multicolor flow cytometry analysis.

BD also has CoEs in Bengaluru, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune.
