Applications are solicited from Indian Nationals working in International research institutions for the “Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellowship”, a Re-entry scheme of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India.

AIM OF THE FELLOWSHIP:

The scheme is conceptualized with the Purpose of attracting highly skilled researchers (Indian Nationals) working overseas in different cutting-edge areas of Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Bio-engineering/Health Care, Agriculture/ Veterinary Sciences and other allied areas by providing them with an attractive avenue to pursue their own R&D interests in Indian institutions

SCHEME:

The Department of Biotechnology has instituted a scheme called”Ramalingaswami Reentry Fellowship” for Indian Nationals that are working abroad in a variety of fields of Biotechnology, Life sciences & all other allied areas and would love to return to India to pursue their research interests

. Ramalingaswami Re-entry Fellows can work in any of the Scientific Institutions/Universities/ relevant Industry in the nation and therefore are qualified for regular research grant via extramural and other research schemes of various S&T agencies of the Government of India.

WHO’S ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?

  1. Scientists working in almost any area of Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Bio-engineering/Health Care, Agriculture/ Veterinary Sciences and all other allied areas will be eligible to apply.
  2. The applicant must have a PhD/MD degree or equivalent in Life Sciences/Biotechnology/Bio-engineering/Health Care, Agriculture/ Veterinary Sciences and other allied areas with a minimum of 3 years of post-doctoral research experience of which at least last two years have to be from overseas research labs.
  3. People who have already returned to India within a year of the closing date of the advertisement will also be eligible to apply.
  4. Candidates need to have a proven/ outstanding track record as evident from research publications and recognition.
  5. If fellow is offered a permanent position, he/she can only avail either fellowship or wages at a given time.
  6. The upper age limit for applying will be 45 years as on closing date of application.

DURATION AND NUMBER OF FELLOWSHIPS:

  1. The duration of the fellowship will be for a period of Five Years. In extraordinary situations, the length of the award could be extended by another 2 years on a fresh appraisal. But during extension the period fellow is qualified only for Fellowship and House Rent Allowance (HRA) and no research/contingency grant will probably be provided.
  2. As much as 75 fellowships will be granted each year.

NATURE OF SUPPORT:

  1. The amount of the fellowship is going to be of Rs.1, 00, 000/- (consolidated) per month.
  2. HRA @ Rs. 18,500 p.m. consolidated.
  3. Every awardee will, in addition, receive a research /contingency grant of Rs. 10, 00,000 for 1st& 2nd year, Rs. 7, 50,000 per annum for 3rd& 4th year and Rs.5, 00,000 per annum for 5th year for purchase of consumables, minor equipment, domestic and international travel, engaging project staff and other contingent expenditure to be incurred in relation to the implementation of this project.
  4. Rs. 50,000/annum will be provided within an institutional overhead.
  5. Awardees will be qualified for routine research grant/s via extramural and other research schemes of different S&T agencies of the Government of India, provided a Co-PI is a regular faculty member.

WHERE WILL AWARDEES WORK:

  1. Awardees can opt to work at any S&T institution such as University/Academic institution/National R &D Laboratory or appropriate Industry in India, provided the Institution where they would like to pursue research is prepared to provide the necessary R&D, administrative, basic infrastructural support to facilitate research and necessary, related support.
  2. The applications need to be duly forwarded from the host institutions against an advertisement.
  3. Selection will be made by Expert Committee/s specially appointed for the purpose.

MODE OF SELECTION:

(i) DBT will advertise the Fellowship once in a year on its Site (www.dbtindia.nic.in), National Newspapers and Scientific Journals (Nature, Science, Current Science, Bio-spectrum etc.).

HOW TO APPLY:

Applications may be transmitted as per proforma downloadable from DBT Site (www.dbtindia.nic.in) duly forwarded by the competent authority to Dr. Meenakshi Munshi, Adviser/Scientist ‘G’, Department of Biotechnology, Block-2, 7th Floor, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi -110 003, both as a hard copy as well as Soft copy (as a single PDF file only).
