A PhD Scholarship at Center for Chromosome Stability (CCS), Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences (SUND), University of Copenhagen.

A fully funded 3-year PhD position is available from January 1, 2018 or as soon as possible thereafter at the CCS, Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine (www.icmm.ku.dk), University of Copenhagen. Associate Professor Luis Toledo will be the principal supervisor for the PhD student, and Prof. Ian D. Hickson will be the primary co-supervisor of this project.

Project title
Regulation and fundamental roles of the intrinsic S-phase checkpoint in mammalian cells

Project description
The S-phase checkpoint (a.k.a. replication checkpoint) is an essential response to multiple kinds of stresses that mammalian cells encounter during DNA replication. Studies so far have focused on understanding the role of the checkpoint in conditions of artificial/exogenous induced stress. However, the S-phase checkpoint and its molecular players are essential for cells already in unstressed conditions. Inhibition of the checkpoint alone leads to massive perturbation of DNA replication dynamics and DNA damage. With this project we will investigate how the

basal or intrinsic checkpoint signaling is established and regulated, and what are the key roles to ensure the faithful duplication of the cell’s genomic content.

Job description
The key tasks as a PhD fellow at the Faculty are to:

  • Carry out and complete an independent research project under supervision
  • Write scientific articles and the PhD thesis on the grounds of your research project
Complete PhD courses or other equivalent education corresponding to approx. 30 ECTS points
  • Obtain experience with teaching and/or other types of dissemination related to your PhD project
  • Participate in the undergraduate teaching of students in pharmaceutical sciences
  • Participate in national and international congresses and scientific meetings
  • Obtain experience from an external research institution, preferably abroad

Research environment
This project will be carried out in Asso. Prof. Toledo’s group in the Center for Chromosome Stability (http://ccs.ku.dk) that was recently established by a grant from The Danish National Research Foundation. It provides a top international level research environment to train young researchers in the fields of Cellular biology, Genetics and Biochemistry. The CCS currently employs 8 principal investigators, 3 technicians, 19 post docs/assistant professors, and 16 PhD students as well as a number of master students.

Qualifications
Applicants should hold an MSc degree in biology, molecular biomedicine, biochemistry or a closely related field. Candidates who do not yet have their degree, but who are expecting to finish with 1–2 months, should specify the date when they expect to hand in their thesis. We are seeking a highly motivated and ambitious individual with good interpersonal and communication skills. Previous experience with techniques in the fields of human cellular and molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry (e.g. cell culture, PCR, western blotting, cloning, etc) will be considered advantageous. Specific experience in the use of fluorescence microscopes and in the DNA replication or DNA damage fields will be looked-for. Fluency in spoken and written English is a requirement. The scholarship is open to both Danish and international applicants.

Application
Applicants are requested to submit their application with the following documents:

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Certificates of Bachelor degree and MSc degree or the equivalent documents.
  • A cover letter describing your research interests and reasons for applying to this position
  • A list of the publications (or manuscripts) that have been submitted or accepted for publication
  • Transcripts of university examinations (from both Bachelor and Master degrees) (in English)
  • Contact details of two referees

Optional:
Applicants are encouraged to provide evidence of English and other skills.

Terms of salary and employment
Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 306,667 (April 2015 level) plus pension contribution, with the possibility of salary negotiation. The University of Copenhagen wishes to reflect the diversity of society and welcomes applications from all qualified candidates regardless of personal background.

Procedures
The deadline for applications is November 14, 2017. After the expiry of the deadline for application, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the Interview Committee. The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen.
