ICMR Awards & Prizes 2017 – Call for Nominations / Applications | Get Upto Rs 1 Lakh Grant

The Indian Council of Medical Research invites nominations/ applications from Indian scientists for ICMR Awards & Prizes for the year 2017 (list given below) in various fields of biomedical sciences.

List of ICMR Awards and Prizes for the year 2017

  1. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centenary Award for excellence in biomedical research  (Biomedical Research)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 1,00,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Centenary Award for excellence in biomedical research was instituted in the year 1991-92 as part of the Dr. Ambedkar Birth Centenary Celebrations. It is awarded to a scientist for excellence in any field of biomedical research.

Criteria : The excellence of work should be evidenced by scientific publications in internationally recognized journals and contributions to advancement of knowledge and/or improvements in medical practices, health programmes, etc.

Category : This Award is open to all age groups. Direct applications are not accepted for this award. Nominations only by certain identified categories of people are considered.

The award will be given for the years 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.


2. Basanti Devi Amir Chand Prize (Biomedical Sciences)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 50,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : This prize is awarded to a research scientist engaged in any area of Biomedical Sciences, including clinical research. The term “Clinical Research” implies carrying out research into the mechanism and causation of disease, including its prevention
and cure.

Criteria : The criterion for selection of the prize is the significance and value of addition to existing knowledge as contributed by a scientist in the field in which he/she has been actively engaged for over ten (10) years and has shown sustained research activity


3. Dr. Subhas Mukherjee Award   (Assisted Reproductive Technology, Reproductive Biology & Endocrinology and Reproductive Health in General)

4. Amrut Mody Unichem Prize  (Neurology)

5. Dr. H.B. Dingley Memorial Award   (Paediatrics) – Age below 40 years.


6. ICMR Kshanika Oration Award   (Biomedical Sciences) – for Indian women scientists

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : This prize is awarded to a woman scientist for her meritorious work carried out in any of the branches of Biomedical Sciences.

Criteria : The research should contribute to the alleviation of human suffering. The scientist should have been engaged in the area under consideration for a number of years.

Category : This award is to decorate/encourage the Indian women
scientists.


7. ICMR Prize for biomedical research for scientists belonging to Underprivileged communities   (Biomedical Sciences)

Award carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : This prize is offered to a research scientist for his/her outstanding and sustained contributions in any field of Biomedical Sciences.

Criteria : The research work carried out should significantly add to the advancement of knowledge in the particular field in which he/ she has been actively engaged.

Category : This prize is awarded to scientists belonging to under privileged
communities. Applicants should provide attested caste/ community certificate


8. ICMR Prize for biomedical research conducted underdeveloped areas – (Biomedical Sciences)

9. ICMR Tilak Venkoba Rao Award   (Psychological Medicine) – Age below 40 years


10. JALMA Trust Fund Oration Award (Leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour
iii) A gold medal

Eligibility : This award is conferred upon a scientist for sustained research activity in the field of Leprosy and other mycobacterial diseases.

Criteria : The work carried out should add to the existing knowledge of various aspects of leprosy


11. Major General Saheb Singh Sokhey Award (Communicable Diseases) – Age below 40 years

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 10,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : It is granted to a scientist for his/her outstanding contributions in the field of Communicable Diseases, significantly adding to the existing knowledge in the field.

Criteria : The facets of work to be considered could be basic or applied research on the mechanism and causation of communicable diseases, their prevention and/or their management. The work assessed for the award is the research carried out in India and
published in scientific journals, during the five years preceding the year for which the award is given.

Category Age below 40 years.


12. Shakuntala Amir Chand Prize (Clinical Research) – Age below 40 years  (Number of prizes – four)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 10,000 each
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : This prize is awarded for the best published research work on any subject in the field of biomedical science including clinical research.

Criteria : The term ‘Clinical Research’ covers research into the mechanism and causation of disease and its prevention as well as cure which includes work on patients in hospitals, field studies in epidemiology and social medicine and observations in general practice. Both
medical as well as nonmedical graduates are eligible for award of this prize. The prize is awarded to Indian nationals for work done in any institution in India. Work started in India but completed abroad is not acceptable. Research Papers published in Indian or foreign journals in the previous five years of the year of advertisement are considered
for this prize.

Category Age below 40 years.


13. Smt. Kamal Satbir Award (Non-tuberculosis Chest Diseases, especially Respiratory Allergy and Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases) – Age below 40 years

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 10,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : It is an award offered to individuals for outstanding contributions in the field of nontuberculous Chest Diseases, especially Respiratory Allergy and Chronic Obstructive Lung Diseases, pertaining to mechanism and causation of the diseases, their
prevention and/ or management.

Criteria : The work to be assessed would be the research carried out in India and published in scientific journals during the five years preceding the year for which the award is advertised.

Category Age below 40 years.


14. Dr. D.N. Prasad Memorial Oration Award (Pharmacology)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour
iii) Gold medal

Eligibility : This prize is awarded to an Indian scientist for work in the field of
Pharmacology.

Criteria : The research work should be carried out in India, as evidenced by published research papers and innovations. The criterion for assessment is the significance and value of addition to existing knowledge in research on pharmacology.

Award will be given for the years: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.


15. Dr. J.B. Srivastav Oration Award (Virology)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : It is an award for the work carried out by a scientist in the field of
Virology.

Criteria : The research work carried out over a sustainable period of time should contribute towards the knowledge related to cure and/or prevention of the viral diseases.

Award will be given for the years: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.


16. Dr. M.O.T. Iyengar Memorial Award (Malaria, Filariasis, Plague or Medical Entomology)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : It is an award to honour a scientist for carrying out research in the fields of Malaria, Filariasis, Plague or Medical Entomology.

Criteria : The work carried out over a period of time should significantly contribute towards the understanding of the causation and management of these infections.

Award will be given for the years: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.


17. Dr. Prem Nath Wahi Award (Basic and/or Clinical Cytology and/or Preventive Oncology)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 1,00,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : It is an award for significant contributions made by a scientist in the field of Basic and/or Clinical Cytology and/or Preventive Oncology.

Criteria : The work carried out over a period of time should contribute towards the understanding of the basic research related to the prevention/cure of cancer.

Award will be given for the years: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.


18. ICMR Chaturvedi Ghanshyam Das Jaigopal Memorial Award (Immunology)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : ` 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour
iii) Gold medal

Eligibility : This prize is awarded for the eminent work carried out by a scientist
in the field of Immunology.

Criteria : The award is given on alternate years for significant contributions
made by a researcher in the field of Immunology.

Award will be given for the years: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021.


19. ICMR Chaturvedi Kalawati Jaghmohan Das Memorial Award (Cardiovascular Diseases) – Preferably a medical person

20. ICMR Smt. Swaran Kanta Dingley Oration Award (Reproductive Biology)

Award Carries

i) Cash award : Rs 20,000
ii) Certificate of honour

Eligibility : It is an award for the contributions made by a researcher in the
field of Reproductive Biology.

Criteria : The work should highlight the underlying mechanisms and/or prevention of the various diseases related to reproductive science.

Award will be given for the years: 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021


21. ICMR-CNMC STS Excellence Award (for medical undergraduate student who has availed ICMR’s STS and has published a research paper in an indexed journal as the first author) [For details, please click here]

Last date of receipt of nominations/applications is 31st January 2018.

How to Apply :

Applications should provide the names and other particulars of the candidates for award of the prizes in the prescribed proforma.

Five copies (Ten copies in case of the Basanti Devi Amir Chand and Shakuntala Amir Chand Prizes) of each of the following documents should besubmitted along with the application:

1. The proforma for application/nomination with the details duly completed.

2. A note giving full details of the outstanding research contributions of the nominee or applicant, which makes him/her worthy of the award.

3. A short biographical sketch of the candidate.

4. A list of papers published by the candidate giving details of work published in Indian and Foreign Journals separately and also indicating whether the journals are indexed or not.

5. List five most significant papers published which are to be considered
for the award. (Enclose five reprints of each of the papers*).

* For Amir Chand Prizes ten copies each of the reprints/offprints of the papers to be considered for the award should be submitted.

Joint Applications :

In the case of joint applications/publications, the prizes shall be divided between the applicants/authors in such proportion as the Selection Board may decide. The role of the individual who applies for the prize should be clearly indicated so as to make it easy to determine whether major part of the work has been done by that person. A certificate from the Senior Author stating that the candidate applying for the award has himself/herself made significant contribution to the research work for which his/her paper is being recommended for the award should also be submitted along with the application.

Applicants need not provide “No Objection Certificates” from co-authors. However, in the event of any dispute, the onus will be on the applicant/ nominee/recipient of an ICMR Award or Prize, and ICMR will not be responsible for any such dispute arising out of counter claims.
