Role Overview
The Project Fellow position at the National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar, supports a research project focused on the early diagnosis of gastric cancer through the discovery and screening of circulatory biomarkers derived from extracellular vesicles. The project aims to develop a robust risk-stratification model for gastric cancer patients and is funded by the Science and Technology Department, Government of Odisha.
The selected candidate will contribute to laboratory research, experimental optimisation, biological sample analysis, and data management while working collaboratively with the research team.
Research Project
Project Title: Unlocking Early Diagnosis by Discovery and Screening of Circulatory Biomarkers from Extracellular Vesicles of Gastric Cancer Patients with the Goal to Develop a Robust Risk-Stratification Model.
Key Responsibilities
- Assists in conducting biological research related to extracellular vesicles and gastric cancer biomarkers.
- Performs laboratory experiments using mammalian cell culture techniques.
- Conducts molecular biology and immunological experiments, including:
- Western blotting
- Immunostaining
- Fluorescence microscopy
- Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) staining
- Supports the testing, optimisation, and implementation of new laboratory techniques and experimental protocols.
- Collects biological samples from collaborating local hospitals as required for the research project.
- Maintains laboratory records, experimental data, and inventory of laboratory materials.
- Analyses experimental results using statistical software and prepares scientific reports.
- Collaborates effectively with research team members and contributes to ongoing project activities.
- Demonstrates effective communication and teamwork throughout the project duration.
Educational Requirements
- Master’s degree (M.Sc.) with a minimum of 60% marks in one of the following disciplines:
- Life Sciences
- Biotechnology
- Biochemistry
- Molecular Biology
- Microbiology
- Zoology
- Physiology
- Bioinformatics
- Other equivalent Bioscience disciplines
Preferred Qualifications
- Qualification in any national-level competitive examination is desirable.
- Previous research experience in a biological laboratory.
- Hands-on experience with:
- Mammalian cell culture
- Western blotting
- Immunostaining
- Fluorescence microscopy
- H&E staining
- Experience in statistical data analysis and scientific report preparation.
- Ability to optimize experimental techniques and maintain accurate laboratory documentation.
- Willingness to participate in biological sample collection from local hospitals.
- Good communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
Compensation
Monthly Consolidated Fellowship: ₹30,000
Age Criteria
- Maximum age: 28 years (as per the advertisement date).
- Age relaxation is applicable for eligible categories in accordance with Government of India rules.
Appointment Details
- The position is purely temporary for an initial period of one year, with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance or until completion of the project, whichever is earlier.
- The appointment is co-terminus with the project and does not lead to admission into a Ph.D. program at NISER.
