About the Role
Applications are invited for the position of Scientific Officer (C) to support the operation and management of TIFR’s advanced Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility. The selected candidate will be responsible for the technical operation, maintenance, administration, and strategic management of high-field NMR spectrometers (600 MHz and 800 MHz), while providing scientific support to researchers utilizing the facility.
The role requires expertise in NMR spectroscopy, instrument maintenance, user training, and facility administration within a multi-user research environment.

Essential Experience
Minimum one year of experience in operating Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectrometers.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience

Key Responsibilities
Technical Operations & Maintenance
- Manage day-to-day operations of 600 MHz and 800 MHz NMR spectrometers.
- Ensure optimal instrument performance and operational efficiency.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot hardware issues, including:
- Probes
- RF amplifiers
- Gradient units
- Related instrumentation components
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime.
- Oversee cryogen management, instrument calibration, and routine servicing.
- Install, update, and maintain NMR software and associated computing infrastructure.
Research Support & User Training
- Provide expert consultation to research groups on experimental design and implementation.
- Assist researchers with specialized and non-routine NMR experiments.
- Conduct theoretical and practical training workshops for students, scholars, and faculty members.
- Certify users for independent operation of NMR instruments.
- Guide researchers in data interpretation and advanced analysis techniques.
- Monitor instrument usage and ensure compliance with operating protocols.
Facility Management & Administration
- Manage scheduling and allocation of instrument access among users.
- Ensure equitable utilization of facility resources.
- Coordinate with the Accounts Department for:
- Billing
- Invoice generation
- External user charges

Technical Competencies

General Information for Scientific Officer Job
1. Place of Posting
All advertised positions are based at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Colaba, Mumbai.
2. Transfer Liability
Selected candidates for all posts may be transferred to other Centres, Field Stations, or units of the Institute, as and when required.
3. Nature of Appointment
- Appointment will initially be for a period of three years, including a one-year probation period.
- Continuation beyond the initial three years will be subject to:
- Comprehensive performance review
- Performance appraisal
- Upon successful review, the appointment may continue until the age of superannuation, which is 60 years.
4. Age Criteria
- The candidate’s age should not exceed the prescribed upper age limit as on the closing date of application submission.
- Age relaxation will be applicable as per Government of India rules.
5. Pension Scheme
Selected candidates appointed against posts at Sr. Nos. 1–29 will be governed by the National Pension System (NPS) applicable to the Institute, unless already covered under the CCS (Pension) Rules, 1972.
