Applications are invited in the prescribed format for the online examination and the award of JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS [JRF 2025] for Ph.D. in Life Sciences at TMC-ACTREC.
The Advanced Centre for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) is a unique institute under the wing of Tata Memorial Centre and a grant-in-aid Institution of the Department of Atomic Energy. ACTREC conducts a Ph.D. program in Life Sciences affiliated with the Homi Bhabha National Institute (Deemed to be a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956).
Fulfilling its ‘bench-to-bedside’ mandate, the institute provides a highly conducive environment for world-class cancer research. ACTREC serves as a national centre for treatment, research, and education in cancer, promising to translate significant discoveries into efficient patient care through innovative exploration of newer avenues at the interface of fundamental and clinical research.
ACTREC conducts an excellent doctoral program that attracts bright students from across the country, who have received several national and international accolades for their cutting-edge research under
the guidance of Principal Investigators of the institute.The research programs at ACTREC amalgamate both fundamental and translational approaches to answer questions related to cancer biology, cancer prevention, and disease intervention. The studies focus on:
- Basic tumor biology
- Cell proliferation, differentiation, apoptosis, metastasis, and carcinogenesis
- Stem cell biology, biochemistry, immunology
- Cancer genomics, genetics, epigenetics, DNA repair, metabolic reprogramming
- Pharmacology and therapy resistance
ACTREC’s advanced state-of-the-art facilities include digital and electron microscopy, animal house, spectroscopy, molecular imaging, flow cytometry, biophysics, structural biology, bioinformatics, and proteomics, providing robust infrastructural support and expertise to address challenging research questions.

Qualifications – ACTREC PhD JRF 2025 Exam
- (A) BS (Research) 4-year / B.S. / B.Sc. bachelor’s degree in Science (UG 4-year/8-semester including 1 year of research) with a minimum of 75% aggregate marks.
- (B) M.Sc. / M.Tech. (Applied Biology, Biochemistry, Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Botany, Life Sciences, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Zoology, or related Biological Sciences / Physics / Chemistry / Mathematics) / M.V.Sc. / M.Pharm. / M.D. / D.M. / M.Ch. from a recognized university with ≥ 55% aggregate marks.Note: Those awaiting results may also apply.
- Candidates with < 55% aggregate marks are not eligible for interviews or admission per HBNI guidelines.
- Candidates with postgraduate courses of only ONE year duration are not eligible.
- Admission to the Ph.D. program is subject to the candidate satisfying HBNI eligibility criteria.
- TMC reserves the right to increase minimum eligibility criteria if a large number of applications are received.
Stipend
- Junior Research Fellowship (JRF): ₹37,000 + 27% HRA per month (HRA applicable only if hostel facility is not opted), which converts to SRF based on performance in the 3rd year.
- Limited hostel facility is available for new entrants for one year on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Scholars are entitled to in-house medical facilities and local transport services.
Application Procedure
- Candidates must carefully read the instructions before filling the online application at https://actrec.gov.in.
- Incomplete forms, missing application fees (where applicable), or required document uploads will be rejected.
- SC/ST/OBC (attach caste proof) and physically handicapped candidates with ≥ 40% disability (attach proof) are exempted from application fees.
- Online application fees are non-refundable.

ACTREC PhD JRF 2025 Exam
Online Examination
- Eligible candidates for the Online Objective Entrance Exam will be listed on the ACTREC website between the 2nd and 3rd week of December 2024.
- Exam Date: January 5, 2025 (9 AM – 12 noon)
- Exam Centres: Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi NCR, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indore, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune, and Varanasi.
Candidates must provide three choices for exam centres. If fewer than 75 students opt for a centre, those students will be accommodated at their second or third choice.
Eligibility for Direct Interview
(Online application is mandatory)
- Holders of valid Junior Research Fellowships from national-level written entrance tests conducted by CSIR/UGC/ICMR/DBT or other recognized agencies.
- Candidates who receive external fellowship intimation by the 1st week of April 2025 must email proof of the award to [email protected].
- JGEEBILS-qualified candidates eligible for the ACTREC Ph.D. program will be shortlisted and notified on the website.
JRF Interview Dates
- Interview-eligible candidates (based on the entrance test or direct interview eligibility) will be listed on the ACTREC website by March 2025.
- Interviews will be conducted between April and June 2025 (exact dates on ACTREC website).

The list of JRF projects offered to Ph.D. students will be displayed on the ACTREC website.
Declaration of Results
The final list of candidates called for interviews will be published on the ACTREC website.
