Applications from Indian nationals are invited for one temporary position of Senior Project Associate under the project entitled “To identify metabolic biomarkers for microbiome for early detection of a) Type-2 Diabetes (T2D), b) Obesity, c) Stress (anxiety & depression, SAD), and d) neurodegenerative diseases (NDD) & Longitudinal Study of Impact of Probiotics” in the School of Biological Sciences, NISER Bhubaneswar funded by Axilor Ventures Private Limited.

Age – 40 years as of May 20, 2023, age relaxation to entitled categories per GOI rules

Tenure – The above position is purely temporary for six months or completion of the project, whichever is earlier and strictly co-terminus with the project and not leading to any Ph.D. degree in NISER. It would, therefore, not confer any right/ claim, implicit or explicit, for consideration/ absorption against any NISER post.

QUALIFICATION

  1. Master’s degree in Biology or Biological/Life-Sciences from a recognized university or equivalent;
    AND
  2. Minimum Four years of experience in research and development in industrial and/or academic Institutions or science and technology organizations.
    OR
    Doctoral Degree in Biology or Biological/Life-Sciences from a recognized university or equivalent.

Preference will be given to the candidate with

  • Interests in applying their knowledge to high-impact industrial research.
  • Experience in solving advanced biological problems and gene/metabolite networking and pathway analysis is required.
  • Interests and hands-on experience in handling and analyzing (meta)genomics, transcriptomic, metabolomics, and meta-metabolomics and applying advanced statistical and multifactorial analyses.
  • Hands-on experience in Metabolomics data acquisition using LC-MS/MS and/or NGS systems.

The Aich Lab (https://www.niser.ac.in/users/palokaich) focuses on understanding the role of the intestinal microbiome on the gut-adipocyte-brain axis. For this industry-funded project, we plan to establish host metabolome markers to identify individuals’ metagenome profiles.

The work would also involve the identification of novel probiotics and their prophylactic or therapeutic roles.
Knowledge of essential bioinformatics would be a plus. People with experience and interest in these areas with a strong desire for innovative research are preferred. The job involves but not limited to a) collection of clinical samples under the supervision of Clinical collaborators from AIIMS Bhubaneswar, b) processing of samples for downstream experiments and analysis.

Monthly Emoluments – ₹42,000/- pm plus HRA (as per rules)

I have applied these techniques in previous research projects, and I’m confident in my ability to apply them effectively.
  3. Can you discuss your hands-on experience with LC-MS/MS and/or NGS systems for metabolomics data acquisition?
    • Answer: I have hands-on experience in acquiring metabolomics data using LC-MS/MS and/or NGS systems. I am proficient in operating and troubleshooting these instruments and have successfully generated high-quality data in previous projects. I am well-versed in the data acquisition process and the necessary quality control measures.
  4. How familiar are you with the role of the intestinal microbiome on the gut-adipocyte-brain axis? Can you provide examples of your work in this area?
    • Answer: I have a strong understanding of the role of the intestinal microbiome on the gut-adipocyte-brain axis. I have studied this relationship extensively during my academic and research pursuits. For instance, I have investigated the impact of specific microbial species on adipocyte function and their influence on brain signaling pathways. I can provide examples of my research findings and publications in this field.
  5. Do you have any experience in collecting clinical samples and processing them for downstream experiments and analysis? How comfortable are you working in a collaborative research setting?
    • Answer: Yes, I have experience in collecting clinical samples under the supervision of clinical collaborators and processing them for downstream experiments and analysis. I understand the importance of maintaining sample integrity and following protocols for accurate results. I am comfortable working in a collaborative research setting and have previously collaborated with clinicians and researchers to achieve project goals.
