Job Description 

The University invites applications from highly motivated bright candidates with interests and skills in laboratory management for working on the position of a Technical Officer to work in the Centre for Integrative and Translational Research (CITRes). This centre will include a state-of-the-art facility for research using multiple animal models.

Purpose of the Position

Technical Officer is responsible for generating genetically engineered mouse models. Core duties include mouse colony management, superovulation, preimplantation embryo collection, cryopreservation, rederivation, IVF, CRISPR procedures, plasmid DNA, ES cell microinjections, ES cell culture and associated experimental work.

The incumbent is also responsible for database management and maintaining an inventory of materials and equipment to ensure adequate supplies for

experimental needs.

Key Responsibilities

Production of transgenic and knock out mouse and rat models

  • Transgenic breeding colony management, superovulation, mating/breeding, checking plugs, embryo collection and culture, sperm collection, IVF, embryo and sperm cryopreservation.
  • Mouse ES cell culture, CRISPR-Cas procedures, DNA and ES cell microinjections, electroporation

Research Support, Design and Execution

  • Modify or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of specific research projects.
  • Study and analyze available literature to provide tools and recommendations to reach desired experimental conditions.
  • Ensure quality and integrity of all data collected.

Experience 

  • A minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience in transgenic and genetically modified rodent model production including experience with:
  • Mouse and rat colony management; mammalian genetics, reproductive biology and embryology
  • Superovulation, Preimplantation embryo collection, Embryo transfers (oviduct and uterine)
  • Embryo and sperm cryopreservation, IVF
  • Tail biopsies
  • Experience with CRISPR based editing, DNA, ES cell and lentiviral microinjection. Knowledge of mouse genetics and molecular biology techniques including PCR, Southern blotting, and genotyping.
  • Knowledge of mammalian anatomy, tissue dissection and collection
  • Experienced in successfully interacting with a variety of people, including academics, staff and members of the community from diverse cultures and backgrounds.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in life sciences or related areas with 4-5 years of relevant experience OR Master’s degree in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Genetics or related areas with 2-3 years of experience. Candidates with lesser experience but with all necessary skills, if selected, will be hired at Senior Lab Technician grade with the possibility for promotion to the Technical Officer Level after attaining the required experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated ability to conduct experimental procedures under supervision. This includes the ability to (a) develop, maintain, execute, and complete research projects of varying size and scope; (b) critically read, understand, and extract information from published medical, chemical, and biological literature to prepare background information for scientific abstracts, manuscripts, lectures, and grant proposals; (c) perform basic data and statistical analysis
  • Ability to independently design experiments and troubleshoot protocols.
  • Demonstrated ability to creatively and analytically resolve problems, make recommendations, and implement new procedures when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently achieve goals, prioritize plan for implementation, organize materials and ensure quality product within established deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to train students and other technicians.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills utilizing sound judgment, tact, diplomacy, political astuteness, and a recognition of situations requiring confidentiality.
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships; interact with all levels of management and employees. Ability to communicate and act as a liaison with a diverse group of researchers.
  • Knowledge of standard laboratory management and safety procedures.

Special Conditions of employment 

  • The incumbent must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment on daily basis.

Salary will be competitive and proportional to the skills and experience of the incumbent.

Skills & Competencies

  • Animal care and management skills, including rodent reproductive biology and embryology.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Proficiency in scientific writing and record-keeping
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work and communicate across a variety of research groups (within and outside the institution)
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work with minimal supervision
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise tasks and execute them timely

Other skills (candidates with proven expertise in at least one of these areas will be preferred)

  • Basic knowledge of Molecular biology (Isolation of plasmid and genomic DNA, RNA isolation, electrophoresis, biochemical analysis, PCR-genotyping, RT-PCR, qRT-PCR), Cell Biology and Imaging, tissue culture (Maintenance of ES cells and cell lines, epi-fluorescence and confocal microscopy), tissue processing, cryo-sectioning, staining and immunostaining are desirable.
