Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences & Bio-Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial and Management Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Materials Science (Interdisciplinary Programme), Mechanical Engineering, Photonics Science and Engineering, Sustainable Energy Engineering, Space Science and Astronomy | (i) A Master’s degree in Engineering with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum. or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Science (4-year programme) with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI and a valid GATE score (the requirement of GATE score is waived for candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the centrally funded technical institutes (CFTIs)). or a Master’s degree in Science or an allied area while satisfying each of the following three criteria: (a) a minimum of 65 percent marks/6.5 CPI in the Master’s degree, (b) first division in bachelor’s degree, and (c) JRF/95 percentile or higher in GATE score.For admission into PhD in Biological Sciences and Bio Engineering, applicants having Master’s degree in Pharmacy/Medicine/Veterinary Science with marks/CPI not below the specified minimum, or Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy/Medicine/Veterinary Science with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI, may also be considered. For admission into PhD in Computer Science and Engineering, applicants with Master in computer applications while satisfying each of the above criteria in (a), (b) and (c) may also be considered. (ii) A valid GATE score is required for the candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Design/Architecture, except in the case of candidates with Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from the centrally funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs). The candidates with Master’s degree in Science must either have a valid GATE score or must have qualified for/in JRF/NET. |

(ii) A valid GATE score is required for admission to the MTech programme in the case of regular (non-sponsored) candidates. The requirement of GATE score is waived off for the candidates with the B Tech/BS (Four Year) degree from IITs with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in B Tech/BS (Four Year). |
Financial Assistantships:
Financial support (in the form of Institute Assistantship) is available to the regular (non-sponsored) students of MTech/MS (By Research) and PhD Programmes.
The student is expected to carry out the assigned duties during the programme. The MTech/MS (By Research) students are currently entitled to a monthly assistantship of Rs.12,400/- for 8 hours of work per week. For PhD students, the corresponding financial support amounts to Rs.31,000/- for the first two years, and thereafter, it is raised to Rs.35,000/- for another three years.
Students may also avail of financial assistantship from external funding agencies (such as UGC/CSIR/NBHM/INSPIRE/DBT/ICAR/ICMR/PMRF etc.).
In addition to the above, several attractive fellowships from Industry/DAE are also available.
How To Apply
- The online applications portal (for Indian Nationals only) will be available from March 22 (Tuesday), 12:00 noon to April 11 (Monday), 12:00 noon, Go to “Important Links”.
- Indian Nationals can apply only through the online mode of application. Foreign Nationals can apply only through offline mode. The last date for receiving applications in both offline and online modes is April 11 (Monday), 12:00 noon.
- Offline Application Form (for Foreign Nationals and for Indian Nationals with a qualifying degree from Universities abroad) (common form for PhD, MTech and MS (By Research)) can be downloaded from Important Links
- PhD applicants must arrange for two letters of reference as well. For this purpose, the names of the referees along with their e-mail addresses are to be provided by the candidate at the online applications portal. The referees will be contacted electronically through an auto-generated mail with a request to submit their recommendations online.
- MTech Admissions: All the admission offers to GATE qualified candidates will be displayed on the Common Offer AcceptancePortal (COAP). Candidates must register at the COAP portal for viewing and accepting their offers. Registration on the COAP portal is free. Candidates are advised to download COAP 2022 information brochure and follow the guidelines (https://coap.iitb.ac.in/) for participation. For these candidates, the COAP Registration number is mandatory for applying at the IIT Kanpur Admission Portal. The offers to candidates who have not qualified GATE will be communicated directly to the candidates by the department via E-mail.
- The application fee is Rs.500 for General, EWS, OBC and OBC-NCL candidates and Rs.250 for SC/ST and all DAP candidates. The application fee is waived for candidates in the ‘Foreign National’ category.
- A separate application form is to be filled out for each programme.
