Contractual Engagement of 74 Project Personnel at the Wildlife Institute of
India, Dehradun

The Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun is a premier national autonomous Institute of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India in the field of teaching, training and research in the area of wildlife conservation and Protected Area management. The Institute wishes to advertise for contractual engagement of manpower for various positions for the following three projects and Tiger Cell:

  1. Country Level Assessment of Status of Tigers, Co-predators and Prey and their
    Habitats in India.
  2. Monitoring System for Tigers–Intensive Protection and Ecological Status (MSTrIPES)
  3. Identification of tiger corridor in and around Palamau tiger reserve
  4. Tiger Cell: In order to achieve the goal of tiger conservation through a holistic approach
    based on science, the Tiger Cell (in collaboration with the National Tiger Conservation
    Authority – NTCA) was established at WII in April 2016. The main mandates of the Cell
    includes i) periodic, country-wide assessment of tigers, co-predators, prey and their
    habitat; ii) ecological monitoring of the Tiger Reserves; iii) implementation of MSTrIPES in Tiger Reserves; iv) site appraisals and evaluation of development projects
    vis-à-vis tiger distribution, dispersal and corridor network; v) maintain National Tiger
    Photo Database for controlling illegal wildlife trade-related to tigers and vi) provide
    training as and when required for ecological monitoring, research and management.

The initial period of recruitment will be for 12 months which may be extended depending on the candidate’s performance and the project needs. The work description, essential and
desirable qualifications, age (as on date of advertisement) and monthly emoluments for the
the required position is given in Annexure – 1.

Mode of Selection

  1. The selection for positions Sno. 1-4 and 6-8 (Annexure 1) will be based on an online
    written essay followed by a personal interview conducted through video conferencing.
    For the position of Office Attendant (Sno. 5, Annexure 1) there will be only a personal
    interview and shortlisted candidates will be directly called for the personal interview.
  2. The online written essay will be for one hour and comprise of a minimum of 300 words,
    essay based on the knowledge of Ecology, Conservation Biology, Sampling techniques,
    Life Sciences, Conservation Genetics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, GIS, Remote Sensing, Geo-informatics and their application in wildlife conservation and relevant conservation issues (25 marks).
  3. The candidates that qualify for the written essay will be notified through our website
    (www.wii.gov.in) and email for the personal interview.
  4. All original documents/certificates must be produced at the time of joining for
    necessary verification. If there will be any discrepancy in the document submitted at the
    time of verification, the selection of the candidate will be cancelled.
  5. The written essay test is of qualifying nature and only the shortlisted candidates will
    be called for the personal interview. The final selection of the candidate will be in
    accordance with the performance in the interview and in order of merit as decided by
    the Interview Committee.

How to Apply

REGISTRATION

  1. 1. The entire process for registration shall be “Online”. Details for online registration and
    test will be hosted on the WII’s website (http://www.wii.gov.in/) under the recruitment section. Online Registration shall begin on 30.07.2021 (09:00 hours) and close on 20.08.2021 (17:30 hours), which is the last date of receipt of application.
  2. All eligible interested candidates are advised to follow the latest updates on WII’s
    website (http://www.wii.gov.in/) under the recruitment section for the online registration link.
  3. Candidates will be required to enter their personal, educational and professional
    experience profiles online besides uploading a recent passport size photograph.
  4. Candidates must mention the Project Position applied for in their applications.

ESSAY EXAM

  1. An email will be sent on the registered email id of the candidate on 29.08.2021 at
    10:30 am. The email will contain a list of 6 essay topics, the candidate has to select one
    topic and write a minimum of a 300-word essay on the same.
  2. Candidates who have applied for more than two positions will attempt one essay only.
  3. Late submission (after 11:35 am) will not be considered and in case of multiple
    submission essays submitted within the mentioned time period will be considered for
    evaluation.
  4. Detailed instructions about the procedure will also be communicated via email to the
    selected candidates

General Terms and conditions:

  1. Incomplete applications/applications sent by Post/applications are liable to be rejected.
  2. Mere fulfilment of the minimum advertised qualification and experience requirement
    DOES NOT automatically entitle an applicant to be called for a written test/interview.
    The decision of the Institute in all matters relating to eligibility, acceptance or rejection
    of the application, mode of selection will be final and binding on the candidates and no
    enquiry or correspondence will be entertained from any individual or his / her agency.
  3. At the time of the verification of original documents or even after selection, if it is found
    that an attempt has been made by the applicant to willfully conceal, misrepresent or
    canvass the facts, such applicant will not be considered for selection and due action will
    be taken.
  4. Age relaxation: Relaxation in upper age shall be allowed in accordance with the
    Government of India, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions
    (Department of Personnel & Training)OM NO. 1501282/2010-Estt.(D) dated 27.03.2012
    as amended from time to time. However, the categories of upper age relaxation are as
    follows:
    a. Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and women candidates up to 5 years.
    b. Other Backward Class (OBC) up to 3 years.
  5. The Director WII reserves the right to reject any candidature in view of incomplete
    information provided by the candidate or for any other reason thereof.

Project: Country Level Assessment of Status of Tigers, Co-predators and Prey and their Habitats in India

Post I

Position: Senior Biologist

No of Posts: 05

Age: 40 years.

Essential Qualification: M.Sc. in Wildlife Sciences/Zoology/Botany/Life Sciences/ Forestry/ Forest Management/Environmental Science/Environmental Management/ Conservation Biology/Veterinary Sciences/Agricultural Sciences/Statistics Genetics/ Biotechnology/ Biochemistry/Molecular Biology/Microbiology/Biosciences/ with a
minimum of 50% aggregate marks in M.Sc. from a recognized University with at least 2 years of research experience in wildlife science or conservation.

Desirable Qualification:

  • Candidates with prior experience in sampling design and animal abundance estimation, knowledge of software like MARK, DISTANCE, R, SECR and MAXENT, able to do fieldwork in harsh conditions will be given preference.
  • Proficiency in using computers and good writing skills in the English language.

Work Description: Analysis of large scale data on animal abundance and indices, field supervision and training, report writing. Work will be both at HQ in Dehradun with several field visits. The job requires extensive travelling to forest interiors, wildlife areas and arduous terrains across India for longer durations.

Position: Research Biologist (field component)

Desirable Qualification: Candidate(s) with prior experience in sampling design and animal abundance estimation will be preferred. Able to do fieldwork in harsh conditions.

Work Description: Population estimation using camera traps, mark-recapture, distance sampling and occupancy analysis. Habitat evaluation and human disturbance assessment. The research work will be carried out in different parts of India. Work will be primarily at
field sites with occasional visits to the HQ at Dehradun.

Position: Research Biologist (Genetics component)

Desirable Qualification: Candidate(s) with prior experience in DNA extraction, PCR
analysis, analysis of genetic data especially sequence and microsatellite will be given
preference.

Work Description: Developing a genetic database of large carnivores to
understand population structure and gene flow. Work will be primarily at Dehradun
lab-based with some field visits for sample collections. Active participation and assistance in routine molecular biology laboratory work.

Position: Research Biologist (GIS component)

Essential Qualification: M.Sc. in Wildlife Science/ Life Sciences/Forestry/

and GIS/Geo-informatics/Biological Sciences with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks from a recognized university

Desirable Qualification: Experience in Remote Sensing and GIS, competency in
Arc GIS, ERDAS IMAGINE and other Open Source Software (Q GIS etc.) shall be given
preference.

Work Description: The job primarily involves handling, processing and analyses of large scale spatial data with data processing, digitization, feature extraction, and analysis within the GIS platform.Maintenance of spatial data, end-user support. Generation of maps and providing other GIS reports and information. Work will be primarily at WII with some fieldvisits for ground validations (if required)

Work Description: Train and handhold forest staff for using and implementing
MSTrIPES, testing apps and desktop versions and providing online services.
The candidate will be involved periodically in population estimation using camera traps,
mark-recapture, distance sampling and occupancy analysis. Habitat evaluation and human disturbance assessment. The research work will be carried out in different parts of India. Work will be primarily at field sites with occasional visits to the HQ at Dehradun.

Project: Identification of tiger corridor in and around Palamau tiger reserve

Position: Project Fellow

Desirable Qualification: Candidate(s) with prior experience in wildlife sampling
design in human-dominated landscapes, and animal abundance estimation will be
preferred. Basic knowledge of remote sensing and GIS. Able to do fieldwork in
harsh conditions.

Work Description: Train and handhold forest department staff for camera
trapping, and animal surveys (using M-STrIPES). The candidate will be involved in population estimation of wild animals using mark-recapture, distance sampling and
occupancy analysis, and habitat evaluation and human disturbance assessment. The research work will be carried out in and around Palamau TR. Work will be primarily at the field site with occasional visits to the HQ at Dehradun.

Project: Tiger Cell

Post VII

Position: Database manager

No of Posts: 01

Age: 42 years.

Essential Qualification: Master’s or PhD.Degree in Wildlife Science/ Forestry/ Environmental Science/ Bio Sciences/Life Sciences/Zoology/Veterinary Sciences with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in M.Sc.

Experience: Candidates with a Master’s Degree should have a minimum of 02(two) years of research experience after Master’s degree and candidates having a Ph.D.degree should have experience of at least one year in the field of conservation or wildlife research after awarding of PhD. Candidate should have a minimum of 03 (three) years of experience in working with animal image recognition software/programs and animal
individual identification software/programs. They should have experience in maintaining large and multiple year datasets.

Desirable Qualification: Experienced candidates in the field of carnivore ecology and
management will be given preference and competency in ecological software are desirable.

Work Description: Maintaining tiger and leopard photo database. Processing
Phase IV data of Tiger Reserves. Supervising tiger and leopard identification
during the All India Tiger Estimation exercise. Work will be both at HQ in Dehradun and HQ in New Delhi. with several field visits.

Consolidated monthly emoluments*: Rs. 40,500

*Institute shall provide Medical and Accidental Insurance Cover. Projects will also provide accommodation (except Office Assistant, who is not eligible for HRA) and only if accommodation is not available HRA as per the admissible norms will be paid to the researchers.
