India could report over 6 crore COVID-19 cases by March 2021: IISc study

As per the Indian Institute of Science’s (IISc) estimate of COVID-19 infections in India, in a better case situation for the nation, by the end of March 2021, India’s total coronavirus cases could be as low as 37.4 lakh and in the worst-case scenario, it could get as high as 6.18 crore at the end of March 2021.

The Indian Institute of Science’s model is “a paradigm shift in mathematical modeling of infectious diseases” and is based on the nation’s COVID-19 data as well as trends observed between 23rd March 2020 and 18 June 2020 “to tune the parameters of the data-driven model”. But, the estimates are most likely to differ after considering the country’s current COVID-19 scenario.

According to its R

20;worse scenario” estimate, the model predicted no COVID-19 peak for India till the end of March 2021. However, according to the “better scenario”, India’s COVID-19 peak can come by the 2nd week of September or October 2020.

The model laid great significance on the initiation of 1 or 2 days lockdown each week to reduce the new infection rate.

According to the research, 1 or 2 days lockdown each week (e.g., Sunday & Wednesday, etc) with total conformity together with appropriate social distancing throughout other days works very well in reducing the spread of the disease.

The study also noted the steady improvement in India’s COVID-19 recovery rate, emphasized the value of suitable healthcare and timely quarantine measures.

It also included, among all measures, contact mapping, quarantine, and social distancing are crucial to stop the viral spread in the absence of vaccination or any other cure.

Currently, COVID-19 tally is around 10 lakh mark with over 24,000 fatalities in India, and the 6 lakh people have recovered. Internationally, the disease has infected 13 million individuals while fatality is over 5 lakh people, and over 8 million people have recovered from the disease.
