PhD PROGRAMME IN BIOINFORMATICS

 

The Institution:

Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB) is an institution of national importance created by
an Act of Parliament under the aegis of UNESCO with the primary focus of providing worldclass education and training, and to conduct innovative research at the interface of multiple disciplines to create high quality human resource in the area of biotechnology.

RCB is offering interdisciplinary doctoral programmes in Biostatistics and Bioinformatics in
partnership with other institutions by creating a virtual faculty pool. These programmes will
be supported through a collaboration with the global pharmaceutical giant, GlaxoSmithKline
Pharmaceuticals India Private Ltd. (GSK) and are subject to RCB Statutes, Ordinances and
Regulations.

PhD Programme in Bioinformatics:

Master’s degree in Computer Science/Bioinformatics/Computational Biology/Biotechnology
with specialization in Bioinformatics.

The candidate should have scored at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in the Master’s
Degree. Those appearing in the final examination and having secured at least 60% marks on an average in all examinations held during the Master’s degree programme are also eligible to apply. However, students will be permitted to join the programme only on production of first-class Master’s degree certificate.

Selection Process:

Interested students may apply online by paying the prescribed application fee of Rs. 500.
SC/ST/PwD/EWS candidates are exempted from payment of application fee. Eligible
candidates will be called for a written test and interview at RCB on 23-24th July, 2020.

Providing false/incorrect information in the application form by the candidate or nonpossession of essential qualifications detected at any stage of the selection process/ after will lead to disqualification/cancellation of admission of the candidate. The decision of the Competent Authority at RCB shall be final and binding in this regard.

Stipend:

Selected candidates shall receive a consolidated stipend of Rs. 45000 per month for the first two years of the programme and Rs. 50000 for the next three years. The stipend shall be subject to taxes as per Govt. of India rules. Continuation of the stipend is subject to satisfactory progress made by the student to be evaluated annually.

A total of four students may be selected annually to these programmes.

Coursework:

In the first year, the students admitted to these programmes will undergo rigorous
coursework to complete the minimum 8 credit requirement for RCB PhD programme as per
its Statues, Ordinances and Regulations. For the detailed course content, please visit

There will also be a three-months statistical internship at GSK’s Clinical Development
Operations Centre in Bengaluru during the programme for the Biostatistics students.

Fees:

The student admitted to the PhD programme will have to pay the following fees:

  1. Laboratory Fees: Rs. 6000 per semester
  2. Tuition Fees (1st & 2nd Semester Only): Rs. 6000 per semester
  3. Academic Administration Fees: Rs. 5000 per semester
  4. Medical Fees: Rs. 3000 per semester
  5. Student Amenities Fees: Rs. 1000 per semester
  6. Caution Money: Rs. 5000 (once, at the time of admission, refundable)
  7. Thesis Examination Fees: Rs. 10000 (at the time of submission of thesis)
  8. Hostel security and other charges will be applicable in case availing hostel facility.
