Life Sciences Program Specialist Vacancy @ International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI)

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a global non-profit scientific organization whose mission is to translate scientific discoveries into affordable, accessible public health solutions to help the people who need them most. Over the last 22 years, IAVI has been instrumental in building bridges between diverse sectors, creating global network and unique partnerships to accelerate discovery, optimization, development and implementation of biomedical innovations tailored to target populations for improved and effective disease management.

In India, IAVI and its affiliate (IAVI INDIA – a Section 8 entity) are focused on facilitating unique and inter-disciplinary partnerships with key stakeholders globally and nationally including with Government of India through its various Ministries and Departments (e.g., Department of Biotechnology, Department of Science and Technology, National AIDS Control Organization, Indian Council of Medical Research, and Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council, among others). Efforts are directed towards accelerating the design and development of affordable and accessible vaccines and other biomedical tools of prevention to help address diseases of public health interest like HIV and Tuberculosis (TB) in India and globally. These partnerships nurture emerging science; support capacity and capability building through trainings, information exchange and technology transfer, and assist in strengthening implementation science capacity to aid in alleviating

the health-burden created by these diseases. (IAVI INDIA is a subsidiary of IAVI and is subjected to IAVI’s policies and practices, unless clearly specified otherwise)

Position Summary:

The Program Specialist under the guidance of Director, Program Management, will be responsible for enabling planned implementation of the bilateral Indo-South Africa Program on HIV/TB. The candidate would be responsible for managing and facilitating program’s overall operational and technical efficiency – collecting and analyzing scientific information, managing milestone-based deliverables and facilitating effective partner communication.

The Indo-South Africa Flagship Program on HIV/TB, is a collaborative research initiative led by the Government of India (Department of Biotechnology and Department of Science and Technology) in collaboration with Government of South Africa and South African Medical Research Council, aiming towards bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scientists from various Centers of Excellences across both the regions to enable translational research and development of regional capacity in the area of HIV/AIDS, TB and HIV-TB coinfection.

Key Responsibilities:

Specifically, the applicant would:

  • Facilitate effective and efficient achievement of the scientific goals of the program by enabling technical alignment and appropriateness. These would include technical areas such as:
    o Clinical research towards establishment of cohorts;
    o Immunological research towards biomarker studies;
    o Pharmacological research towards understanding drug interactions and drug resistance;
    o Translational research towards development of products for HIV prevention and
    treatment, such as vaccine and monoclonal antibody;
  • Gather and analyze information from relevant scientific and academic sources to facilitate alignment of programmatic activities with global needs, best practices and latest scientific trends;
  • Work with the team to enable effective implementation of capacity building efforts: such as trainings, technology transfer and knowledge sharing activities;
  • Facilitate smooth and streamlined communications ensuring timely completion of milestone- based deliverables, as well as enable effective discussions between existing internal and external stakeholders including the PIs/Co-PIs, global experts and donors towards impactful programmatic outcomes.

Experience and Skills:

  • Ph.D. (with 0 – 1 year of experience) in any one of the following areas: life Science/
    Immunology/ Molecular Biology/ other allied field from a top institution;
  • Experience in clinical/immune-biological research in infectious disease area (preferably in HIV/TB);
  • Candidate with an exposure in project management including handling of technical and
    operational issues towards successful implementation would be preferred;
  • Analytical skills to conceptualize and extend intellectual understanding as well as strategize effective monitoring and evaluation of the program;
  • Excellent organizational skills; strong interpersonal relationship skills; excellent presentation skill to convey complex and conceptual ideas to experts and general audience; must have excellent communication skills – both written and verbal;
  • Maturity and poise to interact with senior leadership and both internal and external stakeholders with ability to navigate conversations;
  • Enjoy both working independently and collaboratively in a small collegial team environment with honesty, integrity, intellectual curiosity;
  • A self-starter with the ability to deliver under pressure and meet deadlines effectively.
