This programme aims to support suitably qualified applicants in any discipline to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at an eligible higher education institution in Ireland. Fellows will hold a Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship. These fellowships can be held for either one or two years.

The Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is an established
national initiative, funded by the Department of Education and Skills and managed by
the Council.

This programme aims to support suitably qualified candidates in any discipline to
pursue a postdoctoral fellowship at an eligible higher education institution in Ireland.
Fellowships can be held for either one or two years.

The Council is the largest provider of individual postdoctoral fellowships in Ireland and
typically makes an investment in 80 new postdoctoral fellowships every year.

In 2017, the Council invested in a total of 78 postdoctoral fellowships from 23
countries, bringing the total number

of Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship
awards in 2017 to 215.

An established, national initiative

The Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is unique in the Irish
research landscape. Among its features are:

• Individual, prestigious awards for excellent research in the name of the
applicant;
• An objective selection process using international, independent expert peer
review;
• Funding across all disciplines, from archaeology to zoology;
• Awards for bottom-up, non-directed research

The programme provides outstanding fellows with the opportunity to develop
publications connected to their PhD research or to develop a new research project in
their chosen area of interest or one that significantly expands on their PhD.

Pioneering proposals addressing new and emerging fields of research or those
introducing creative, innovative approaches are welcomed. Proposals of an
interdisciplinary nature are also encouraged as it is recognised that advancing
fundamental understanding is achieved by integrating information, techniques, tools
and perspectives from two or more disciplines.

Highly competitive

The Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship Programme is highly competitive,
with an average success rate of 15 per cent over the last five years. The programme
is globally recognised and attracts many applications from international researchers
who wish to undertake excellent research in the Irish higher education and research
system. The programme has enjoyed excellent gender balance across its STEM and
AHSS streams.

Successful applicants who become fellows under the programme are recognised as
demonstrating world-class potential as future research leaders

Eligibility

An applicant must have either graduated or have been certified as having fulfilled all the requirements for the award of a doctoral degree, including the submission of the hardbound corrected thesis, within the five year period between 31 May 2014 and 31 May 2019.

What we offer

  • a salary of €31,275 per annum
  • employer’s PRSI contribution of €3,395 per annum (10.85% of salary)
  • employer’s pension contribution, where applicable, of €6,255 per annum (20% of salary)
  • eligible direct research expenses of €5,000 per annum
