Every year the TED Fellows program selects a new group of extraordinary, multidisciplinary individuals by open application. We look for innovators on the rise in their respective fields with bold, original work.

Application cycle dates:

We welcome anyone over age 18 to apply. We choose 20 Fellows to attend every TED Conference.

Who should apply:

We look for different applicants compared to many additional leadership-oriented programs. Instead of business people, professionals, policy wonks and government officials, the TED Fellows program focus on doers, makers, inventors, advocates, filmmakers and photographers, musicians and artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, NGO heads, along with human rights activists.

Along with impressive accomplishment, fine character and a fantastic heart are also significant traits we look for in TED Fellows. More than anything, this focus on character has defined the success of this TED Fellows program

.

The selection Procedure:

TED Fellows are chosen by the program staff, together with extensive reference checking and consultation with experts across all fields. Selections are made by the group as a whole, not by individuals.

There’s no algorithm for how we select our TED Fellows. We select Fellows according to their accomplishments in their respective fields, the potential impact of their work and their character. The ideal applicant is multidisciplinary in their pursuits and is at a moment in their career to maximize the support of the TED community.

About the TED Fellows program:

What are you looking for in a TED Fellow?

We are searching for people that have an established track record of fantastic work in their field and are on the brink of an extraordinary breakthrough but want the additional support to get there. We are searching for people from all disciplines that have collaborative, kind personalities.

Why should I apply for a Fellow?

The TED Fellowship program has the potential to catapult your career forward. By attending and speaking at the TED conference, you’re going to be provided a platform to talk about your work and thoughts far and wide, and you’re going to meet individuals who can assist your career. As a Fellow, you will also join the highly effective global network of TED Fellows — innovators who could be potential collaborators. Fellows have access to personal mentorship opportunities, public-relations guidance, speaker coaching and more.

What exactly does”demonstrated remarkable accomplishment” mean in the Fellows selection process?

We are searching for makers and doers, not talkers. Wow, us with the organizations you have started, causes you have fought for, the research you have done, the art you have created. Actions speak louder than words.

What do Fellows do once they get to the TED conference?

Fellows work with the team on a four-minute TED talk in the months leading up to the conference. TED pays for round-trip economy airfare, ground transportation to and from the conference location and shared and meals accommodation on site. Before the conference starts, Fellows take part in a pre-conference where they fulfil the other Fellows, participate in skill-building workshops, attend talk rehearsals and more.

When the primary conference starts, Fellows deliver their talks on stage. All these are filmed and considered for release on TED.com. Following the talks, Fellows take part in the conference as a regular attendee. They could watch the other talk sessions, speak with other TED attendees and meet new collaborators and friends.

How long does the Fellowship last?

Though the Fellowship is centred around the yearly TED conference, we’d like to say”Once a Fellow, always a Fellow.” So long as you wish to stay engaged with the TED Fellows neighbourhood, you may!

I am part of a team. Can I apply to be a Fellow together with my colleague(s)?

No. The Fellows program supports people leading ground-breaking projects, and you need to apply as an individual. If you’re working as part of a group, we still encourage you to apply. In the past, collaborative teams have chosen a single member to apply for the fellowship. In your application, please clearly delineate your particular contribution to the larger organization or project.

What are the terms of the Fellowship?

If you’re selected, the TED Fellows team will provide you with a terms and conditions agreement to be signed before your Fellowship begins.

TED Fellows application requirements:

Can TED Fellows applicants will need to be a particular age?

All candidates must be 18 years or older by the time they apply.

If chosen, what’s the necessary time commitment as a Fellow?

Once chosen as a Fellow, you ought to be available to talk with the TED Fellows team through videoconference for about ten hours (over the span of roughly 3 weeks ) before the TED conference.

The fundamental need of this TED Fellowship is that you’re accessible to attend the TED conference in person, for the whole time. Along with the most important five days of the TED conference, all Fellows must participate in a three-day pre-conference. This means you’ll be asked to block a total of eight consecutive days in your schedule.

Is English proficiency a necessity?

Since the TED conference is conducted in English, English proficiency is a necessity. But, we don’t require applicants to be native English speakers. Many do, in fact, have other native languages.

Do I need to cover any costs if I become a TED Fellow?

No. We pay for the expenses of transport to and from the TED conference, any visa you will require, accommodations and food while at the conference and convention registration.

Will TED provide Fellows with their visas?

Applicants chosen to be TED Fellows are responsible for applying for their own visas. But, we do provide a formal letter of invitation which ought to be sufficient for most countries’ visa procedures. While we do our very best to assist each Fellow, we cannot be responsible if a visa is denied. We do pay for visa application fees.

TED Fellows selection process:

What’s the TED Fellows selection timeline?

We read every application, and therefore the review process takes time. You may expect to hear back from us within 6 to 7 months after the application closes. From every applicant pool, we all take 20 Fellows to attend the conference. All candidates are notified of whether they have been chosen to join the TED Fellows program.

Do you offer application deadline extensions?

We don’t. We’re extremely firm about this deadline. Please, note the deadline is in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

How do I choose to write my references?

Choose people who know you well and can speak to your accomplishments, passion and character. Big names or famous men and women won’t make your application stronger as our goal is to get to know you and your work better. We strongly urge you to keep away from requesting partners or family members for references, if you don’t work together professionally.

Be certain that you notify your references before listing them on your application and also to provide us with correct contact info. We reserve the right to contact them at any given point during the application procedure, and their failure to respond can weaken your application.

When I’ve applied previously but did not obtain a Fellowship, may I apply again?

Absolutely! We encourage you to apply again. There are a lot of reasons you may not have been chosen previously but may be a terrific match for a future class.

I really don’t believe I have the slightest chance. Should I still apply?

If you are considering being a TED Fellow, apply! In fact, a number of our past Fellows never have imagined receiving a TED fellowship in their wildest dreams. Let’s be the judge!
