Extra mural research (EMR) financing scheme of SERB to academic institution, research laboratories and other R&D organizations to perform fundamental research in most frontier regions of Science and Engineering is currently in limelight for at least four decades since in the beginning of SERC. This strategy promotes emerging and distinguished scientist in area of engineering and science for individual centric competitive mode of financing. Considering that the strategy offers core research support to the active researchers, the present name Extra mural research (EMR) was renamed as Core Research Grant (CRG).

Goal:

The strategy offers core research support to active researchers to undertake research and development in frontier regions of Science and Engineering.

Qualification:

  • Applicants [Principal Investigator (PI) and Co-Principal Investigator(s) (Co-PI(s))] needs to be Indian citizens. Foreign nationals (like OCI and NRI) will also be eligible to apply provided they fulfil the qualification standards advised by SERB ( SERB Funding Guidelines for overseas nationals dated 27th October 2016 ).
  • The applicant(s) has to hold a normal academic/research position in a recognized academic institution or national lab or at any other known
    R & D establishment in India.
  • Faculties recruited through UGC-Faculty Recharge Program are qualified to apply. INSPIRE Faculty, Ramanujan and Ramalingaswamy Fellows are eligible to apply provided they have at least three and half years of tenure remaining in the time of submission of application.
  • Researchers who are superannuating throughout the whole period of the project or already superannuated will also be eligible to apply. In these scenarios, a Faculty/Scientist in the host institute that has 5 years of service remaining ought to be associated as a Co-PI. The host institution must enable the investigator to continue after superannuation and supply required support towards execution of this project.
  • The PI and Co-Investigator(s) must hold Ph.D. degree in Science, Mathematics, Engineering or M.D / M.S. / M.D.S. / M.V.Sc degree at the time of applying for grant.
    The expression”Regular” in the context of CRG refers to the candidates that are appointed against the sanctioned post or in a tenure post, but are very likely to be renewed after the conclusion of the tenure.
  • [Notice: Research Associates, Ad-hoc faculties, Guest Faculty, Visiting Scientist, consultant, Project Fellows and Faculty members whose contract has been renewed annually aren’t eligible.] (In instances where it Isn’t covered in any of the aforementioned, SERB has the right to Ascertain the eligibility)

Nature & Duration of Support:

  • The CRG strategy offers research support to a single researcher or a number of investigators working at a recognized academic institution or national lab or at other established R & D establishment in India.
  • Personal Academic associations with legal UGC / AICTE / PCI approval, Personal R&D Institutions with legal DSIR-SIRO recognition and Voluntary and
  • Non-Governmental Organizations enrolled under NITI-AAYOG Darpan portal are entitled to sponsor a project.
  • The financing is supplied generally for a period of 3 years.
  • The research grant is provided for equipment, labour, consumables, travel and contingency.  “Overheads” can also be given to the executing institution according to existing standards of SERB.

Selection & Mode Of Application:

  • An applicant is qualified to apply only 1 proposal in a call.
    Any proposition technically rejected shouldn’t be resubmitted with no significant revision to any programs or schemes of the SERB.
  • Not greater than 1 project is permitted at any particular time. But, projects under the programs EMEQ, HRHR, IRRD and special calls are exempted from such a category. The PI is encouraged to apply for one more project six months before the conclusion of this project.
  • The Call for applications will be made twice annually and will be informed via the site”www.serbonline.in” and”www.serb.gov.in”. The application form together with a suitable research proposal emphasizing the research work to be undertaken ought to be submitted online via the site”www.serbonline.in”.
  • The choice will be determined by the recommendations of Program Advisory Committee (PAC) featured by the Board. If needed, the applicants possibly called for discussion/ presentation.

How to Apply Online:

For successful online submission of the application the following points could be noted:

  • Applicant(s) should register to the online site click here to register
  • Once log-in, applicant(s) are expected to fill all of the compulsory fields in Profile Detail segment under User Profile. Including Bio-data, Photo, Institute Address etc..
  • In case you’ve CO-PI on your proposal then guarantee that the CO-PI’s will also be enrolled into the system after the exact same procedure.
  • Some of the particulars of your proposal such as Project Title (maximum 500 characters), Project summary (maximum 3000 characters), Keywords (Maximum 6), Objectives of project (maximum 1500 characters), Expected outcome and output of this proposal (maximum 1500 characters), Budget (Manpower,Consumables,Travel, Equipment, Contingency, Overheads ) need to be entered in the time of proposal submission.
  • Other pertinent information of this proposal needs to be uploaded in single PDF file not over 10 MB as other specialized record (OTD). (Download Template)
