Two 3-year PhD scholarships building on a 5-year Master degree funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation via a Laureate Research Grant to Kenn Gerdes is available in the Section for Functional Genomics of the Department of Biology. The starting date of the scholarship is April 1, 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Area of research
The projects aim to characterize factors that are contributing to the survival (persistence) of bacteria in the stationary phase using Escherichia coli as the model organism. The PhD candidates will gain experience in working with bacterial genetics, biochemistry and physiology, using cutting edge techniques in molecular biology and microbiology.
Qualifications
The preferred candidates will have a Master degree in molecular microbiology or related field. We expect the candidates to have a background with focus on molecular biology, and work with recombinant DNA and/or proteins. Experience with bacterial gene expression is seen as an advantage. Further requirements are fluency in written and spoken English. If you finish your Master degree between the deadline for applications and April 1, 2017, you should confirm

Shortlisting procedure
After the expiry of the deadline for application, the authorized recruitment manager selects applicants for assessment on the advice of the interview committee. All applicants are then immediately notified whether their application has been passed for assessment by an expert assessment committee. Selected applicants are notified of the composition of the committee and each applicant has the opportunity to comment on the part of the assessment that relates to the applicant himself/herself.
The final selection of successful candidates will be made by the Head of Department, based on the recommendations of the assessment committee. Successful candidates will then be requested to formally apply for enrolment as a PhD student at the PhD school of the Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. Terms of salary and employment
Terms of appointment and payment are in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Federation of Professional Associations (AC). The starting salary for candidates with an MSc degree will be a minimum of DKK 309.109 annually (April 2016 level) plus pension contribution with the possibility of salary negotiation.
