Job Title – Research Assistant

Job Description:

  • A Research Assistant position is available to join the laboratory of Dr Martin Bidartondo in the Department of Life Sciences.
  • The post is funded by the Natural Environment Research Council, in close collaboration with investigators at Kew Gardens, the Natural History Museum and the University of Leeds.
  • The post holder will be based at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
  • You will be involved in ecology and evolution research on the fungal symbioses of plants.
  • Your main duties will include generating and analysing DNA data, i.e. carrying out DNA extractions from field and laboratory plants and fungal isolates, PCR, cloning, DNA sequencing, bioinformatics and phylogenetics.
  • You will also assist with microscopy analyses and the cultivation of fungi and plants, facilitate the smooth running of the laboratory and contribute to the effective communication of results to members of the research group.

Qualifications:

  • You must have a BSc (or equivalent) in biological sciences and have experience of working in a laboratory. An MSc or MRes in ecology, evolution, plants or fungi is desirable.
  • Experience in DNA extraction, sequencing and editing, PCR, bioinformatics or phylogenetics would also be desirable.
  • Experience of working in a team, the ability to develop and apply new concepts and have a creative approach to problem-solving are essential.
  • You must have good interpersonal and organisational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to pay close attention to details.
  • You must also be able to organise your work with minimal supervision and prioritise it in response to deadlines.
