PhD Studentships @ British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (BSAC)
An inter-professional organisation with over 40 years of experience and achievement in antibiotic education, research and leadership. Dedicated to saving lives through appropriate use and development of antibiotics now and in the future. Communicates effectively about antibiotics and antibiotic usage via workshops, professional guidelines and its own high impact international journal.
Purpose: The PhD studentship scheme is designed to ensure a flow of first-class students into the field of antimicrobial chemotherapy, providing them with an excellent training in research
Entry requirement: Awarded or expected 1st class or high upper 2nd class degree, or MSc with merit or distinction
Who can Apply: BSAC PhD Studentships are open to applicants on a worldwide/ international basis
Duration of grant: BSAC studentships are designed to support a PhD Student for up to 4 years in duration
Value of grant: Up to a maximum of £25,000 per year, for the duration of the grant
BSAC PhD studentships are funded to a maximum value of £25,000 per year, covering fees for a maximum of 4 years in duration. Non EU applicants will need to ensure their host institution is able to support any additional costs outside of this £25,000 award i.e. any additional funds required outside of the value of this grant will need to be sought elsewhere.
Number of Awards: Subject to availability of funding
Award may include:
- Student stipend
- Tuition fees (set by the research institution)
- Research consumables, directly attributable to the project
PLEASE NOTE: BSAC is in the process of implementing an online solution for managing all grant applications. This system will be available for access during the month of September 2016.
How to Apply:
Applications must be submitted electronically via the BSAC online Grants Submission System. The application must be made by an established investigator who will be the supervisor, and who has previously received three or fewer studentships. Applications may be for named or unnamed students.
Completed application comprising:
- Student, names of two supervisors and institution details
- Detailed research proposal
- Statement detailing the scientific techniques for which the student will receive training
- Budget detailing annual costs (stipend, tuition fees, consumables)
- Training record for each named supervisor
Accompanying documents (supervisor):
- Letter of support from the Head of Department
- Brief CV of the supervisor(s). Maximum 2x A4 sides
Accompanying documents (student):
- Record of candidate’s academic performance
- Full CV of the candidate and statement of career intentions
- Two academic letters of reference
For non-UK university degrees: Evidence from Graduate Office that degree held conforms to 2.1 degree or higher
Decision process:
- Applications will be issued for external peer review, after which they will be considered by the BSAC Grants Committee
- Applicants will be notified of a decision by the grant committee by the end of May of the same year the submission is made
