Program Overview
NIBMG has been running its Integrated MS-PhD program since 2019. Students admitted into the program undergo master’s coursework during the first two years, including Master’s projects under NIBMG faculty’s mentorship. Post these two years, students may be permitted to continue to the PhD component, based on overall performance and eligibility. Those opting not to continue will exit with an MS degree. The PhD thesis requires a minimum of 3 years and a maximum of 5 years for submission.
Curriculum
The curriculum includes theoretical courses, lab courses, and research projects. The first year focuses on basic biology topics, while the second semester introduces Human Genetics, Genomics, Biostatistics, and Data Analysis. The third semester involves advanced genomics and bioinformatics courses, and the fourth semester is dedicated to project work initiated earlier.
Research at NIBMG
Research at NIBMG revolves around the genomic background of human health and disease, encompassing areas like cancer, infectious and chronic diseases, computational biology, and statistical genomics. Minimum Eligibility
Applicants must be Indian nationals with at least 55% aggregate marks in a relevant bachelor’s degree. Relaxations apply for SC, ST, OBC, and PwD categories. Final-year students can apply, provided they meet the minimum marks at admission time.
Candidates who fulfil the minimum eligibility conditions and have qualified any of the following entrance exams (in the current year or latest exam held) may apply online.
- Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS conducted by NCBS/TIFR)
- Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. JAM- in Biotechnology (BT) / JAM in Chemistry (CY)/ JAM in Mathematical Statistics (MS).
Selection Procedure
Candidates are shortlisted for interviews based on their JGEEBILS or JAM scores, set by NIBMG. Final selection is interview-based, with seat reservations as per Indian regulations.
Continuation and Exit Options
After two years, students can choose to continue with PhD research or exit with an MS degree. Completing the first four semesters with a minimum CGPA is mandatory for the MS degree.
Fellowships
Admitted students receive a fellowship of Rs. 16,000/- per month for the MS component. Post transition to PhD, students receive Rs. 25,000/- to Rs. 28,000/- per month, depending on national fellowship qualifications.
