Bose Institute, established in 1917 by Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose, is recognized as Asia’s first modern interdisciplinary research centre. The Institute has maintained a century-long tradition of excellence in scientific research across biological and physical sciences. The total intake for the Ph.D. programme is 41 students, distributed as follows:
- Department of Biological Sciences: 19

Eligibility Criteria for Ph.D. Interview
Candidates must satisfy all of the following conditions:
- Age Limit
- Maximum age: 28 years as on the closing date of application
- Age relaxation applicable as per Government of India rules
- Fellowship RequirementCandidates must have qualified in a national-level test with a valid Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) such as:
- CSIR-UGC NET (Category-I)
- DBT-JRF / DBT-BINC-JRF
- ICMR-NET
- DST-INSPIRE
- Any equivalent fellowship
The fellowship must:
- Be valid up to at least 31 July 2026
- Cover the full tenure of the Ph.D. programme
- Educational QualificationMaster’s degree (or equivalent) in Science / Engineering / Technology / Medical disciplines
- Minimum marks:
- 55% for General category
- 50% for SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer)/Differently Abled candidates (as per UGC norms)
Final-year postgraduate students are also eligible, provided they:
- Have qualified in a national-level test
- Submit final mark sheets or degree certificates at the time of joining (if selected)

- Additional Conditions
- Candidates with DST INSPIRE Fellowship must also qualify in exams such as GATE, JEST, or NET (Category-II/III).
- Candidates with valid scores in GATE, JEST (Ph.D.), ICAR AICE-JRF (Ph.D.), NET (Category-II/III) or equivalent may apply even without an active JRF.
- Such candidates may be considered for a limited number of institute fellowships, awarded based on merit and interview performance.
Important Notes on Eligibility
- INSPIRE candidates will be admitted provisionally, subject to final fellowship award.
- Admission may be cancelled if fellowship is not granted.
- Candidates with only ICAR AICE-JRF (Ph.D.) are not eligible unless they also possess an approved fellowship listed above.
Fellowship Details
Fellowships will be provided as per Government of India norms:
- JRF: ₹37,000 + HRA (as applicable)
- SRF: ₹42,000 + HRA (as applicable)
