About the job

The Lab In-charge will oversee the operation, maintenance, and management of advanced instrumentation and laboratory facilities. They will be responsible for ensuring that equipment is functioning optimally, providing technical support to researchers, and ensuring safety protocols are followed. The role requires a blend of technical expertise, management skills, and the ability to train and supervise laboratory staff, research scholars, and students.

Key Responsibilities:

Instrument Management:

• Operate and maintain a wide range of sophisticated laboratory instruments and equipment.
• Perform routine calibration, troubleshooting, maintenance of logbooks, and repairs of laboratory equipment.
• Ensure the timely maintenance and servicing of all instruments to minimize downtime.

Technical Support:

• Provide technical assistance to researchers and lab users on the proper use and handling of instruments.
• Assist in the preparation and execution of experiments and tests using instrumentation.
• Ensure correct sample preparation and adherence to protocols.

Inventory and Procurement:

• Monitor inventory levels of consumables, chemicals, and lab supplies.
• Assist in the procurement of new instruments and materials as per the facility’s needs.
• Maintain proper records of inventory and usage.

Safety and Compliance:

• Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
• Conduct safety checks and provide safety training for lab personnel.
• Maintain lab documentation and standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Staff Supervision and Training:

• Supervise junior technicians/research scholars/students and assist with their training on lab procedures and equipment usage.
• Provide guidance to ensure quality control and accuracy in laboratory testing and operations.

Documentation:

• Maintain records of instrument usage, calibration, and maintenance schedules.
• Prepare reports on lab operations, instrument performance, and any issues or incidents.
• Prepare and display SOPs.

Education:

• Master’s degree in Biological Sciences (Biotechnology, Food and Environmental Sciences, Biochemistry, Microbiology).
• Doctoral degree in a relevant discipline (preferred).

Experience:

• Minimum 2-3 years of hands-on experience with laboratory instruments and equipment in a research or university setting.
• Experience with specific instrumentation such as Refrigerated Centrifuge, PCR, Lyophilizer, UV Visible Spectrophotometers, Shaker Incubators, etc., is an advantage.

Skills and Competencies:

• Strong technical knowledge of laboratory instruments and their maintenance.
• Ability to troubleshoot and perform minor repairs on instruments.
• Good understanding of laboratory safety and compliance requirements.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills.
• Ability to train and supervise lab staff effectively.
• Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
