Interview Questions for Research Assistant (JC – 17)

  1. Question: Can you describe your experience with nucleic acid extraction and gel electrophoresis techniques? Answer: Certainly. I have hands-on experience in performing nucleic acid extractions from various biological samples and running gel electrophoresis for DNA and RNA analysis. I have used these techniques to isolate and characterize genetic material for various research projects during my academic training.
  2. Question: How familiar are you with the development of diagnostic tests for genetic disorders? Could you provide an example of a project or technique you’ve worked on in this area? Answer: I am familiar with the principles of developing diagnostic tests for genetic disorders. In a previous project, I contributed to the design and optimization of a PCR-based assay for detecting a specific genetic mutation associated with a rare disorder. I collaborated with the team to validate the assay’s sensitivity and specificity using clinical samples.
  3. Question: Could you elaborate on your experience in genetic counseling activities and its role in rare genetic disorder research? Answer: I have been involved in genetic counseling sessions where I assisted in explaining complex genetic information to patients and families. Genetic counseling plays a crucial role in rare genetic disorder research by helping individuals understand their condition, potential risks, and available options. Effective counseling ensures informed decision-making and contributes to patient care.
  4. Question: How do you approach genome analysis, and what tools or software are you proficient in using for this purpose? Answer: Genome analysis involves analyzing large-scale genetic data to extract meaningful insights. I approach it by first preprocessing and quality-checking raw sequencing data, followed by alignment and variant calling using tools like BWA and GATK. I also utilize software such as IGV and Variant Effect Predictor to interpret and annotate genetic variants.
  5. Question: Can you provide an example of a manuscript you drafted for publication? How did you ensure the clarity and scientific rigor of the content? Answer: Certainly. In a recent project focused on identifying disease-associated genetic variants, I drafted a manuscript describing our findings and methodology. To ensure clarity and rigor, I followed the IMRAD structure, clearly outlining the Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion sections. I also conducted thorough literature review and collaborated with co-authors to refine the scientific content before submission.

These interview questions are designed to assess the candidate’s hands-on experience, technical skills, and understanding of genetic research, molecular biology techniques, and genetic counseling, which are crucial for the Research Assistant role in the Rare Genetic Disorder division at TIGS.
