IIT Roorkee is organizing institute-funded SPARK fellowships for internships with a weekly stipend of ₹2500/week and project-funded internships in 2023.

Program Objectives –

To provide research exposure to interested undergraduate and postgraduate students of IITR.

To attract and nurture talented undergraduate students of other institutes. Some of these students may then choose to apply for postgraduate or doctoral studies at IITR.

Eligibility –

Criteria

Students who are currently enrolled and have completed at least two semesters of the undergraduate degree (B.Arch./B.E./B.Tech./M.Sc/MA) in a relevant discipline from any institute in India.

The following minimum CGPA criterion will apply:

• CGPA > 7.5 for IITs/IISc.
• CGPA > 8.0 for NITs/ IISERs/ NISER/IIEST/UM-DAECBS.
• CGPA > 8.5 for students of other institutes.

Guidelines –

• Please login to submit your application and view status of your application.
• Applications need to be submitted through an online portal made for the purpose where the applicants will upload the last semester marksheet of current degree, photograph, a 500-word research statement, and a brief 1-2 page resume. For students of other institutes, No Objection Certificate (NOC)will also be sought on joining.
• Applicants need to mention names of five faculty members of their choice from the list of faculty members interested in having a summer intern.
• Accommodation and mess facilities in the Bhawans, subject to payment of necessary charges at par with that paid by students living in hostels. The average cost of housing would be around Rs.5500/month (including mess facility).
• All interns will be issued a temporary institute ID to avail the library, sports, medical, computer centre, internet, and other institute and departmental research and recreation facilities. She/He will be required to abide by the conduct rules of the institute, failing which the internship will be terminated and the intern will be asked to leave.
• At the successful completion of the internship, a certificate from the institute with the name of the intern and mentor, signed by Dean, SRIC, will be issued to all interns.

FAQ’s

• Are MTechs eligible/Are BSc students eligible/Are final year BTech students eligible?

• No. BTech/BE/integrated MSc students/MSc students who would have done two semesters before summer 2023 and have at least a semester remaining after summer 2023 are ONLY eligible.

• What is a research statement? Where to upload it?

• You need to mention your motivation for doing research, your research background, and areas of interest. It need not mention the specific project you are applying for since you may be applying for several projects. Attach it along with your resume or transcript.

• Will I get an acknowledgement? What does the status mean?

• Currently, we do not have the acknowledgement feature. If files have been uploaded and at least one priority of faculty is set, your application is considered submitted. The decision on the application will come in the month of May.

• When will the summer internship be held? Can I take leave in between?

• The internship should preferably be of 8 weeks or more, but not less than 6 weeks in any case. IITR students can start immediately after the ETE. Other students should come during the summer vacation starting on June 1st 2021. Leave is not permitted during the internship.

• Why the CGPA criteria cannot be relaxed? OR I am having a CGPA of 6 but I have great research credentials; why you do not consider me? OR Is CGPA everything? OR why my institute is not listed along with IITs or NITs?

• The minimum CGPA criteria is a policy issue and CANNOT be relaxed this year. All your suggestions are however well received and we will check over this again after this year’s program.

• How are you going to select students?

• The selection committee will look at all your credentials based on the information provided and make a decision. We cannot entertain requests for more information.

• My files are not being uploaded? OR I cannot see files after uploading?

• First, check the size restrictions, prefer a pdf file size of less than 200 kB and max of 200 kB. There are online tools available to reduce picture sizes if needed. Let us know by email or on the portal if you have followed the instructions and are yet not able to upload/view files.

• How to convert % to cgpa?

• Follow the usual practice of your institute, if they have a guideline in this regard. Otherwise divide % by 10.

• There is no submit button.

• Once you submit documents and set priorities, applications are considered submitted. Please make sure before uploading files as the files cannot be changed.

• I am having problems uploading files.

• Please read the instructions on the portal carefully and follow the given format. You will not be able to change once uploaded. If you want to change your complaint us through the complaint box given on your portal.

• What will be the criteria for selection?

• Selection criteria will be determined by a selection committee and cannot be disclosed.
