Advertisement for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme for the Autumn Semester 2022

IISER Kolkata invites applications from motivated students for admission to the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) programme for the Autumn 2022. The selected candidates can do Ph.D. in any of the following disciplines: Biological Sciences, Chemical Sciences,Computational and Data Sciences, Earth Sciences, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Statistics,Physical Sciences and Space Sciences.

Reservations for candidates will be as per Govt.of India norms.
Eligible applicants of the PhD programme are encouraged to apply for the attractive Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (https://pmrf.in/) in addition to applying to IISER Kolkata regular admission.

Highly motivated candidates having Master’s degrees such as M.Sc/MS/ME/M.Tech/ MVSc/ MSc (Ag) or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks) in any branch of biological sciences to pursue research in the broad fields of –

Cellular and Molecular biology, Molecular immunology, Developmental

biology, Structural biology, Chemical biology, Molecular Microbiology, and Plant virus, Behavioral biology, Ecology, Evolutionary biology, Genetics, Marine biology, Microbial ecology, Neurobiology, Biodiversity, Microbiology, Biophysics, Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Biochemistry, Food Technology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physiology, Human Physiology, Medical Biotechnology, Enzymology, Synthetic Biology and Theoretical biology.

Interdisciplinary Research Area Preferred background of the student from other areas
Structural biology, cryo-Electron Microscopy, Image processing, biophysics, molecular modeling, molecular dynamics simulations, biomolecular NMR, Structural and Clinical proteomics of fluids and tissues in human diseases, Mass spectrometric Imaging of cancerous tissue, Microbiome & Cancer Biophysics/Biochemistry/Biotechnology/Physics/Chemistry/ Computer Science
Computational Biology A Master’s degree, with minimum 55% marks or CGPA/CPI of 6.5 on a 10-point scale, in any field of Applied Mathematics, Applied Statistics, Bio-technology, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biophysics, Biochemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Statistics
Theoretical and Computational Biophysics (Modeling of cell motion, biological random processes, intracellular transport etc.) Master’s degree in physics/Chemistry/Applied mathematics/Applied statistics/Computer science/ Bio-technology/ Biophysics/ Biochemistry/any engineering field with 55% marks or CGPA/CPI of 6.00/10. Experience of programming in C/C++/FORTRAN/Matlab/Python will be a plus point.

 

Applicants must have any one of the following qualifications –

  • Qualified a National Eligibility exam that provides a 5-year PhD fellowship such as CSIR–JRF / UGC–JRF / DBT–JRF–A / ICMR–JRF / DBT–BINC–JRF. The NET JRF/other National entrance test passing certificate should be valid as of 01 August 2022. Applicant must be qualified for a Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to be eligible to apply through NET JRF mode. Applicants applying through INSPIRE mode must have a valid provisional INSPIRE offer for consideration of their application at level II of the selection, issued by DST at the time of interview).
  • Applicants must indicate at least ONE DBS faculty as their choice while applying. Indicating choices of up to THREE faculties (those with vacancies in their laboratories) are strongly recommended to improve chances of shortlisting.

Sponsored positions that do not require own fellowship –

Project funded PhD student(s)

A1. A project funded PhD position is available in the Integrative Taxonomy and Microbial Ecology Research Group (PI- Professor Punyasloke Bhadury) to address questions pertaining to developing new approaches to map aquatic ecosystems and trophic levels such as in freshwater systems.

Essential Qualification – Master’s degree holder including Integrated MS in any discipline of Biological Sciences/Life Sciences/Environmental Sciences/Biotechnology with a minimum of 55% marks can apply. Candidates who have qualified for one of the National eligibility exams – CSIR-UGC/ NET LS/GATE/JAM/JGEEBILS/ICMR-JRF/ etc. may be preferred. Previous proven background in undertaking extensive fieldwork across various aquatic ecosystems, aquatic chemistry and ecology-based measurements with evidence of contributing to peer-review publication would be preferred. Candidates should clearly mention their area of interest in their SOP based on the above-highlighted themes.

A2. A SERB sponsored project position is available in the research group of Dr. Neelanjana Sengupta.

Additional criteria – M.Sc in Chemistry/Biochemistry/Biophysics, and with a qualification in at least one or more National eligibility exams such as GATE/NET-LS/etc. CGPA of 8.5 or higher; direct experience in molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecular systems. Preference will be given if the candidate has submitted an application for the DST-INSPIRE scheme.

A3. A project-funded Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Anuradha Bhat to work in the area of fish community ecology, species distributions, and the effect of ecological factors in shaping fish assemblages in streams.

Minimum qualifications – Master’s degree or equivalent in Ecology, Zoology, Environmental Biology (with minimum 65 % marks). The candidate should have qualified for one of the National eligibility exams like GATE/NET-LS/ etc.

Additional criteria – Essential/desirable experience: Experience in Field ecology especially aquatic systems, willingness to work for extended periods in the field, strong skills in mathematical and statistical analysis of data; field experience in fish sampling, fish taxonomy highly desirable.

B. Institute-funded Ph.D. positions – Candidates with valid GATE score or NET-LS qualification are eligible for the following positions

B1. In the laboratory of Amirul I. Mallick – An Institute-funded Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Amirul I. Mallick to work in the area of molecular immunology and host pathogen-interaction towards developing effective measures to control viral infection.

Minimum qualifications – Master’s degree or equivalent in any branch of life sciences (with a minimum of 55% marks). The candidate should have qualified for one of the National eligibility exams like GATE/NET-LS/ etc.

Additional criteria – Experience in Biotechnology/Microbiology/Molecular Biology and strong communication skills are desirable. Prior wet lab experience in virus handling and cell biology study is preferred.

B2. In the laboratory of Partha P. Datta – An Institute-funded Ph.D. position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Partha P. Datta to work in the area of structural and molecular biology of proteins and macromolecules.

Minimum qualifications – Master’s degree or equivalent in any branch of life sciences, organic chemistry, physical chemistry or BS-MS/ MS/ ME/ M.Tech//MSc degree or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks); The candidate should have qualified one of the National eligibility exams like GATE/NET-LS/ etc.

Additional criteria – Background in the area of Structural biology/ Computational Biology/ Biochemistry/ Biophysics/ Molecular Biology/ Microbiology/ Biotechnology/ Cell biology will be desirable. Preference will be given to any previous work experience in one or more of these areas: cryo-Transmission Electron Microscopy/ X-ray crystallography/ Image processing/ Computational biology/ protein purification/ cell biology/ Biochemistry/ biochemical assays/ and molecular modelling and docking. The candidate is preferred to have had Mathematics in class 12th standard and strong communication skills are desirable.

B3. In the laboratory of Punyasloke Bhadury – An Institute-funded Ph.D. position is available in the lab of Punyasloke Bhadury to address ecological health status of aquatic ecosystems such as coastal oceans as well as elucidating ecological links between biological complexity and biodiscovery.

Minimum qualification – M.Sc. in any discipline of Biological Sciences/Life Sciences/ Environmental Science/Biotechnology with a minimum of 55% marks can apply.

Additional criteria – Preference will be given to any previous experience of working extensively in aquatic ecosystems or proven experience in developing new approaches for assessing the effects of anthropogenic stressors on aquatic ecosystems.

B4. In the laboratory of Rahul Das – An Institute-funded Ph.D. position is available in the lab of Dr. Rahul Das to study the regulation of T cell signalling and receptor tyrosine kinases.

Essential qualification – M.Sc/MS/ME/M.Tech//MSc degree or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks); The candidate should have qualified for one of the National eligibility exams like GATE/NET-LS/ etc.

Additional criteria – Background in the area of Biochemistry/ Biophysics/ Molecular Biology/Biotechnology/ Cell biology will be desirable. Preference will be given to any previous work experience in protein purification, cell biology, and biochemical assays. The candidate must have had Mathematics in class 12th standard.

B5. In the laboratory of Robert John Chandran – One Institute-funded Ph.D. Fellowship is available in the laboratory of Dr. Robert John Chandran. Interested candidates may choose one of two possible options for PhD projects –

(1) studying the ecophysiology of tropical dry deciduous forest trees in central India, focusing on plant responses to high temperature and water stress. We will study photosynthesis and water relations of tree species, using techniques in ecophysiology as well as landscape ecology using GIS/Remote Sensing
OR
(2) Data science and landscape ecological modelling of forest/landcover transitions, climate change impacts on vegetation and biodiversity, sustainability science.

Essential qualification – M.Sc/MS/ME/M.Tech/MSc degree or equivalent (with minimum 55% marks) in Ecology / Environmental Sciences / Life Sciences / Botany / Mathematics / Statistics / GIS-Remote Sensing or relevant fields in Biology, Earth and Environmental Sciences or Mathematics; The candidate should have qualified one of the National eligibility exams like GATE/NET-LS/ etc.

Desirable skills – According to the project in mind, the candidate should have a deep interest and commitment to addressing ecological questions using field ecology and/or mathematical/statistical modelling. Basic understanding of ecology, plant ecophysiology, landscape ecology, mathematical/statistical modelling, ESRI Software, R Software as applicable to the position.
