10 Points That Will Help You Find Your Next Biotech Job – Recommended Video – Watch Now
Hello everyone, this is Shekhar Suman from Biotecnika and today we will discuss 10 Points That Will Help You Find Your Next Biotech Job.
Let’s get started
Start preparing for your job hunt in the first year of your degree itself
What this means is that, start looking around for opportunities and start getting a feel for what the industry is looking for. Utilize your weekends, utilize semester breaks, make use of free time for the following things – internship, certification courses, hands-on training, publishing papers. studying research journals and keeping yourself updated with the latest in our industry.
- Having a degree in biotech is not enough
This may sound depressing but what this means is that you must have practical knowledge and skills. Now you may say well I learn these at college, but the catch is that the college syllabus is not updated always. So by doing all of the things above i.e., internships, training etc you get industry-ready.
2. Following a crowd = You will always be part of the crowd
Don’t try to copy what others are doing. Reach out to your mentors, gurus and people in the industry. They will know what the current scenario looks like and they can guide you better than your friends. Do not copy the same CV as your friends too. You must make an attempt to stand out from the crowd, not blend in.
3. Set high goals and reverse engineer it
Try to think like how successful people do. It’s simple in the day and age of the internet. Your best friend for this is LinkedIn – check out the profiles of people working in the fields you are interested in and observe their journey. See what they have studied or worked on etc and check out 10 such profiles and that way you will get an idea as to what is required of you.
4. Be flexible about job location but particular about the job description
Look at the title and the job description and see if it matches. Sometimes job titles can be misleading so endure that you look at the description and use the policy of reverse engineering and work it out if it fits your dreams and ambitions. Don’t limit your dreams to locations.
5. Highlight the right keywords in your CV
All companies employ AI to screen through applications. So AI will shortlist resumes based on relevant keywords that the job has needed. So make sure your skill sets are optimized for the keywords that they are looking for.
6. Building LinkedIn networking strategy and winning recommendations
Update your profile with a good profile picture, it should look professional, keep your account up to date, all your recent activity is updated, like certifications, educational qualifications, publications etc, also maintain a good rapport with your mentors and request them to write recommendations for you. Don’t ask your peers or juniors to write recommendations for you though.
7. KYC Series
A unique offering by Biotecnika is exclusively available on the Biotecnika App. It’s called Know Your Biotech Company Series – wherein every week or bi-weekly we pick up one company and we go in-depth about the company, concerning jobs, profiles and recent job posting etc.
8. Clean up your social media accounts
HR’s of today always check your socials to see if they can see some red flags.
9. Delayed gratification leads to better fruits of success
Pay attention to more learning. Gain more qualifications, skill sets relevant to your fields.
10. Salary Negotiation Skills
Don’t sound like a snob. Use the right words. There is a budget for every company and they will not go beyond that budget.
