PhD Admission 2020
- Students are welcomed to join the Ph D programs of the Institute in Physics as well as Biophysical Sciences starting from August 2020.
- The curriculum begins with a pre-Ph D course work, commonly called Post M.Sc. program.
- For Physics stream, the Post M.Sc. programme is divided into two branches: Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics.
Application procedure
The eligible students can apply for the programmes only through the online application (available from early March 2020)

Selection procedure:
A first screening will be made based upon previous academic records of the candidates.
A more shortlisting of applicants will certainly be made based on the performance in nation-wide screening test as mentioned below:
For Physics:.
i) Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST).
ii) GATE in Physics.
iii) CSIR/UGC NET for JRF in Physics.
For Biophysical Sciences:
i) Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and also Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) conducted by NCBS-TIFR.

) CSIR/UGC/DBT/ ICMR NET for JRF.iii) GATE in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry.
- The short-listed candidates will be called for interview to be held at SINP (during May-June 2020).

Fellowships and benefits:
The chosen students are admitted to Post M.Sc. as Junior Research Fellow (JRF). Relying on the selection procedure and eligibility in nation-wide screening tests, there is 2 type of fellowships the students can enjoy:
i) SINP fellowships for applicants who are chosen through JEST, JGEEBILLS, GATE:
- 31,000/- p.m. for 1st two years.
- 35,000/- p.m. for subsequent years.
Tenure: Fellowships are awarded for a maximum of 5 years. These fellowships are renewed yearly, based on satisfactory performance.
Contingency, HRA etc. according to rule.
ii) Extramural fellowships awarded by external funding authorities of Govt of India (UGC, CSIR, DBT as well as ICMR) for applicants that are selected through NET.
For extramural fellowships, the amount of fellowship, contingency grant, HRA and various other benefits will certainly be based on CSIR/UGC/DBT/ ICMR guidelines (SINP will take no financial responsibility for students chosen in this scheme).
For all candidates, limited hostel accommodation will additionally be available.
The approximate number of Intake:
Candidates with SINP Fellowship: 20.
Candidates with Extramural Fellowship: 20.
Eligibility
Physics: M.Sc. in Physics.
Biophysical Sciences: M.Sc. in Physics/ Chemistry (with Life Science at 10 +2 level) or M.Sc. in Life Sciences (with Chemistry and also Mathematics at 10 +2 level).
Students appearing in the last exams for their M.Sc. degrees during the current academic session might also apply. Nonetheless, their selection will be on a provisional basis and admission will certainly be subject to effectively passing the final examination in compliance with the cut-off requirement for SINP.
