For undertaking advanced research in the area of human health & welfare, a collaborative agreement with All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhubaneswar has been signed by an autonomous institution under the Department of Biotechnology, the Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar. Strengthening the partnership between the two institutions in education, research, and outreach is the aim of this pact.

Dr. RenuSwarup, Secretary, Department of Biotechnology, welcoming the agreement said, “This is a much-needed partnership. For translating our research leads, we need more of such collaborations between basic research groups and clinical researchers.”

In 1989, the Institute of Life Sciences was established as an autonomous institute under the administrative control of the Government of Odisha. In 2002, the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, took it over. Then in July 2003, the institute was dedicated to the nations by the then Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In the areas of life sciences, it has a broad vision of carrying out high-quality multidisciplinary research. The overall development and betterment of the environment, agriculture, and human health is the goal. For

future India, its mission is to generate skilled human resources.

By undertaking cutting-edge research, it seeks to achieve the vision and mission using state-of-the-art technologies in the fields of viral infections, vector-borne diseases such as filaria and malaria, genetic disorders, allergy, cancer biology, agricultural productivity, and auto-immune disorders.

With financial support from the Dept. of Biotechnology, Government of India, the institute has established the necessary infrastructure including flow cytometry, genomics and proteomics platforms, high-performance computing facility, zebrafish facilities, imaging facilities, animal house, green-house, and plant tissue culture.

The institute has successfully recruited a high number of faculties with a high level of competence in research fields like computational biology and bioinformatics, developmental biology, nano-technology and nano-medicine, environmental biotechnology, plant immunity,  plant biotechnology, microbial biotechnology, immuno-genomics,  cell biology, structural biology, gene function, and regulation, immunology, and auto-immune diseases, etc.

To promote and facilitate research on infectious diseases, the institute has set-up an extension center at the Ispat General Hospital, Rourkela. For collaborative research involving neighboring research organizations like AIIMS, KIIT, NISER, RPRC, IIT, NRRI,  and others, the institute has initiated and is particularly committed to developing the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack cluster model.
