Admission to the THSTI-JNU PhD Program for the Academic Year 2019-2020-Monsoon Session
Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) is Part of the inter-disciplinary Biotech Science Cluster in Faridabad in the National Capital Region. THSTI is designed to be a dynamic and interactive Organization with a mission to run advanced translational research across professions and disciplines to Accelerate the development of theories to products to enhance human health. THSTI is a known R&D institute of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi offering doctoral programs in biomedical science research.
Applications are encouraged for the THSTI-JNU PhD programs under biomedical research.
The wide domains of continuing research are:
- Vaccines and infectious diseases
- Translational research in child and maternal health
- Drug discovery and mathematical modelling to understand disease biology
- Human microbial ecology
- Diagnostics, devices and bio-design

Qualification:
a. Age: Maximum age limit is 28 years as on July 1, 2019. Upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years For reserved category candidates (SC/ST/Persons with Disability (PwD) and female candidates ) and 3 Years for OBC — Non-creamy layer applicants.
b. Educational qualifications and fellowship requirements:
The candidate should fulfil one of the following standards:
Group A: should have qualified in the junior research fellowship examination of CSIR, UGC, ICMR, DBT (category I only), BINC (such as bioinformatics & computer science) or NBHM that Offers fellowship for The whole duration (five years) of their PhD program.
- Should have a Master’s degree in any branch of biomedical/life sciences (including veterinary Science, public health), bioinformatics, computer science or Mathematics from a recognized university with at least 55% marks or its equivalent (e.g.: grade B in the UGC 7-point scale) or a B Tech in Biotechnology.
Group B:
Must have an MBBS or BE/B Tech (Computer Science/Biotechnology/biomedical engineering) Or post-graduate degree in life sciences, or Mathematics from a recognized university/institute With 55% marks or its equivalent together with a valid GATE qualifying score.
Candidates appearing in the final qualifying examination may also apply. But They’ll Be required to fulfil The above mentioned academic/ fellowship requirements at the time of joining the PhD program on 1st of July 2019.
Relaxation in marks/grade during Master’s Degree for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (Non-creamy Layer)/differently-abled and any other categories will be applicable as per the UGC notification, 5th May 2016 or Subsequent notification in effect of in the time of interview.

Application process: Candidates meeting the above requirements should apply online by 10th May 2019. Please take a print out of this application, sign and send it to the Officer (Academic) of this institute at the preceding Address together with the application fee and self-attested copies of documents in support of eligibility in order to Reach by 13th May 2019.
Applications received after the closing date won’t be entertained on any ground including postal delay. Incomplete applications whatsoever will be summarily rejected and no correspondence in this regard will be entertained.
Application fee: Non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500 for General and OBC candidates, and Rs. 250 For SC/ST/Women/differently-abled applicants ought to be paid by bank draft in favour of Translational Health Science and Technology Institute payable at Faridabad. Selection process: Names of shortlisted candidates will be declared on our site by 17th May 2019. Shortlisted candidates will need to appear for an admission test at THSTI on the 3rd of June at 9:30 am. Applicants that clear the Admission test is going to be interviewed on 3rd and 4th June 2019. Final selection will be made based on the Applicant’s performance in the interview along with the list of selected candidates will be published on the THSTI Site within a working week of this interview.
Fellowship: Students from group A recommended for admission to the PhD program and holding fellowship From any of the aforementioned agencies will have to utilize their own fellowship. Students chosen from Group B Will be granted THSTI fellowships equal to this CSIR-UGC Fellowship amount.
No. Of seats: A total of around 20 candidates may be chosen this year, even if found appropriate. The number of chosen Candidates may be less if adequate candidates don’t secure the minimum credentials required for admission.
Reservations: 27% seats for OBC (non-creamy layer), 15 percent of seats for SC, 7.5percent of seats for ST, 3 percent of seats For differently-abled and 10 percent for EWS are reserved for candidates belonging to those categories. SC/ST/OBC/EWS candidates are required to submit certificates in regard to the claims from authorized Officers notified by the Government for the purpose from time to time. The differently-abled (with minimal 40% disability) candidates are required to submit a certification from authorized Medical Doctors/Hospitals Indicating the extent of physical disability.
Academic program: Selected students will undergo PhD course work for two semesters beginning on 1 st July 2019. Those having successfully finished the PhD course requirement will be recommended by the Academic Committee to JNU for PhD registration. For the award of the doctoral degree, the candidate will have to Complete all requirements according to the JNU rules.
Fees: Admission fees, annual fees, registration fees or any additional fees levied by JNU will be payable by the student.
Hostel: Selected students will have the option of shared hostel accommodation instead of their HRA.
