ACADEMIC PROGRAMS

A) TEACHING PROGRAMS

The Institute offers the following academic programs:

1. Master of Arts/ Master of Science in Population Studies (M.A./M.Sc.) – two years
2. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biostatistics and Demography – two years
3. Master of Population Studies (MPS) – one year
4. Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Population Studies / Biostatistics & Demography – one year
5. Integrated M.Phil. and Ph.D. in Population Studies / Biostatistics & Demography – four to seven years
6. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Population Studies – four to six years
7. Post-Doctoral Fellowship (P.D.F.) – one Year
8. Diploma in Health Promotion Education (D.H.P.E) [Offered by the Family Welfare Training and Research Centre (FWTRC), Mumbai in affiliation with IIPS]

B) COURSE DETAILS

MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) IN BIO-STATISTICS AND DEMOGRAPHY

The two years (full-time) Master degree course is designed to provide a high level of understanding in Biostatistics and Demography including an in-depth knowledge of the linkages between statistics and various socio-economic, health and environmental factors. This course provides a foundation to graduate students and prepare them to apply the concept of bio-statistics in various aspects related to
population.

2.1. Eligibility Criteria for Admission

Admission to this course is open to all candidates having B.A./B.Sc. Degree (passed/appearing) in Biostatistics or Health Statistics or Mathematics or Statistics or having B.A./B.Sc. degree with two full papers on Mathematics or Statistics from a recognized university in India or abroad with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks/equivalent grade in all subjects. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for
admission provided they secure financial support from any outside agency.

Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by 30th September on the year of admission.

The upper age limit of the applicant is 25 years as on 30th June. Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to reserved categories and female candidates as per GOI rule only.

Eligibility for admission can be relaxed by the admission committee in exemplary conditions. The Institute reserves the right to decide the number of seats to be filled in. The Institute also reserves the right to change/alter certain rules at any time.

2.2. Selection Criteria for M.Sc. Biostatistics and Demography Course

The selection is made on the basis of an Online Test. The Online Entrance Test comprises objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Entrance Test consists of basic general knowledge, logical reasoning, English grammar, population, health and statistics/mathematics. The test venue is notified in the Admit Card. Admission test is not conducted for the foreign candidates and the admission is offered directly if the foreign candidates fulfill the eligibility criteria of the Institute.


MASTER OF POPULATION STUDIES (MPS)

The one years (full-time) Master degree course is designed to provide high level of understanding of population sciences including an in-depth knowledge of the linkages between population and various socio-economic, health and environmental factors. This course provides foundation to Post-Graduate students in population studies/demographic issues and provides a comprehensive idea to conduct future research in various aspects related to population.

3.1. Eligibility Criteria

Admission to this course is open to all candidates having M.A./M.Sc. degree (passed/appearing) in Anthropology, Bio-statistics, Economics, Geography, Health Statistics, Mathematics, Political Science, Population Education, Psychology, Rural Development, Social Work, Sociology, and Statistics from a recognized university in India or abroad with a minimum of 55% of aggregate marks/equivalent grade.
Candidates having Master degree, other than subjects specified above and having at least two years of experience in Population and Health related field are also eligible to apply. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided if they secure financial support from any outside agency.

Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by 30th September on the year of admission.

The admission to MPS course is through a two-stage process: (i) Online Test, (ii) a Personal Interview. The Online Entrance Test comprises objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Entrance Test consists of basic general knowledge, logical reasoning, English grammar, basic mathematics, population, health and social science issues. The test venue is notified in the Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates are called for personal interview at  IPS. Final selection is based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test and personal interview.

Shortlisted candidates appearing for admission test are entitled to claim sleeper class train fare by the shortest route on production of original tickets and in case of road journey normal fare will be paid only for travel by public transport run by a Government body.


MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (M.Phil.) IN POPULATION STUDIES/ BIOSTATISTICS &
DEMOGRAPHY

The M.Phil. degree program is designed to provide high level of understanding of research methods and specialization in prospective research area. This course provides comprehensive idea to conduct future research in various aspects related to population.

4.1. Eligibility Criteria

Admission to this course is open to all candidates having Master’s degree in Population
Studies/Demography/Bio-statistics and Demography/Bio-statistics and Epidemiology (passed/appearing) with at least 55% marks or equivalent grade. Eligible foreign candidates can also apply for admission provided they secure financial support from outside agency.

Candidates who have already passed the qualifying degree examinations and those who have already appeared/ shall be appearing in the final qualifying examinations are eligible to apply. However, the admission of the candidate will be cancelled, if s/he fails to furnish final result by 30th September on the year of admission.

The upper age limit of applicant is 30 years as on 330th June Marks and age will be relaxed for candidates belonging to reserved categories and female candidates as per GOI rule only.

The Institute reserves the right to decide the number of seats to be filled in. The Institute also reserves the right to change/alter certain rules at any time.

4.2. Selection Criteria for M.Phil. Course

The admission to M.Phil. course is through a two-stage process; on line test and personal interview. The online Entrance Test consists of objective type questions of multiple choices. The syllabus of Entrance Test consists of questions on English, logical reasoning, Statistics, Mathematics, Bio-statistics, research methodology, Population Studies, Demography, and Epidemiology. The test venue is notified in the Admit Card. Based on the performance in the Online Test, shortlisted candidates are called for personal interview at IIPS. Final selection is based on the weighted average of scores of Online Test and personal
interview. The Institute does not bear any travel expense of the candidates called for the test/personal interview.

The admission test shall be conducted online at different designated centres in
