Applications are invited for admission to PhD programme in Biological Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Economic Sciences, Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mathematics and Physics for the semester Beginning from January 2019.
Research Areas:
Department of Biological Sciences offers research in the areas of Biochemistry, Biophysics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, Cancer Biology, Epigenetics, Plant Cell and Developmental Biology, Metagenomics, Systems Biology, Ecology, Evolution and Molecular Systematics.
Eligibility:
Minimum Qualification
- M.Sc. /M.Tech. Or equivalent degree in the relevant discipline with a minimum of 60% marks or CGPA/CPI of 7.0 on a 10 point scale (total percentage/CGPA/CPI; not just in the majoring subject). Students with M.Sc. /M.Tech. Or equivalent degree in a branch of Physics, Chemistry, or Mathematics may also apply provided they have an aptitude for research in Biological Sciences
If the transcript/grade sheet issued from the Institute/University reports:
A. Only marks: percentage will be considered
B. Only grades: CGPA/CPI will be contemplated. If CGPA/CPI is reported on any scale other than 10 (eg. ) 4 point/ 8 point scale), an equal CGPA/CPI will be calculated according to the following formula: CGPA/CPI in a 10 point scale = (CGPA/CPI Obtained×10)/PS PS = Point scale used by the Institute/University.
C. Both marks and CGPA/CPI: Percentage equivalent of CGPA/CPI, as indicated on the transcript/grade sheet, will be considered. The conversion factor has to be available in the transcript/grade sheet.
2. Exceptionally brilliant applicants with B.Tech. /MBBS/MCA may also apply for the PhD program in Biological Sciences.
3. In addition, a National level exam like GATE / CSIR-UGC-JRF / DBT-JRF (category I only) / ICMR-JRF (category A only) / CSIR-UGC-LS / Provisional letter of INSPIRE-JRF for PhD / Rajiv Gandhi National Fellowship or some other recognized score is mandatory. The certificate/fellowship has to be valid at the time of admission. Please be aware that the National level examination criteria isn’t compulsory for the students who have finished their BS-MS degree with CPI 8.0 and over from any of the IISER (Berhampur, Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati).
A relaxation of 5% of marks will be permitted for applicants belonging to SC/ST/PD categories.
Merely fulfilling the eligibility criterion doesn’t entitle a candidate to be called for the interview.

- Candidates that are appearing or are about to appear for final assessments of the qualifying degree program are eligible to apply for the PhD program. But if chosen, admission to the PhD program would be conditional upon their finishing the qualifying degree together with all the defined marks standards, in the time of joining.
- Selection will be determined by interviews of those shortlisted candidates, which will be conducted at the Institute premises only.
- Relaxation of eligibility standards for SC/ST and PD applicants are according to Government of India norms. Candidates belonging to reserved category might need to submit pertinent certificates if chosen.
- Applying and fulfilling the minimum eligibility standards doesn’t necessarily guarantee that a candidate will be shortlisted for interview. The Department of Biological Sciences will use additional standards (according to academic performance and/or performance in the national level tests) so as to shortlist applicants for interviews based on the number of applications received.
- Candidates in the time of interview must bring together at least a letter of recommendation in a sealed envelope. The recommendation letter could be directly sent by the referee(s) to [email protected] prior to the interview date.
Selection Procedure:
The selection process for admission to the PhD programme will be based on the performance of the candidate in the interviews that will be conducted in 2 rounds (Rounds I and II). Candidates shortlisted from Round I, could have the option to interact with faculty members in the department after which Round II of the interviews will likely be conducted to the last selection. Throughout the interviews, the candidate will be assessed for their conceptual knowledge and the research aptitude in the field of Biological Sciences.

Preferably not more than 28 years. Age relaxation of 3 years will be given for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and 5 years for SC/ST/PD/Female applicants.
Upper age limit shall be determined as on the last date of online submission of applications. Date of Birth as recorded in the Matriculation/ Secondary Examination Certificate/Aadhar Card only will be accepted by the IISER Bhopal for determining the age.
