How We Select?

Gates Cambridge utilizes a three-stage selection procedure to ensure Scholars meet all our standards at the maximum level.

1. Departmental ranking

To be able to make sure only the most outstanding candidates are believed, the Trust asks academic departments from Cambridge to rank qualified applicants on academic capability only. People that are put forward by their own branches are regarded as the most academically outstanding applicants they’ve obtained that year.

2. Shortlisting

When the Trust has a list of ranked candidates, these are divided into broad subject areas and handed into our Shortlisting Committees.  These Committees take a look at the candidates’ whole application package (like the Gates Cambridge Statement and Reference) and employ all of four Gates Cambridge standards so as to recognize people who will be invited for interview. Everybody who’s shortlisted for interview will probably have gone through a very aggressive process and will reveal evidence of fulfilling the four Gates Cambridge criteria.

3. Interview

All shortlisted candidates have a brief interview to evaluate how they fulfill all of four Gates Cambridge standards and Scholars are chosen after interview. Additional information are available in the interview page.

Feedback

Please be aware that Trust isn’t able to give feedback to applicants.

How to Apply:

Applicants must fill out an application for graduate admission, a College place and financing – like a Gates Cambridge Scholarship – through the University’s Graduate Applicant Portal.

Besides this part for admission, the University’s graduate application form carries a special Gates Cambridge segment which asks applicants to submit the following:

A 3,000 character (500 word) statement about their fit with the Gates Cambridge programme

The statement is utilized by the Gates Cambridge shortlisting committees to distinguish between candidates that have been highly ranked by departments on academic grounds. It assists our committees to identify those candidates that, in addition to being academically outstanding, have an aptitude for leadership and dedication to enhancing the lives of others. Here is the only area of the application form where applicants are especially asked about their match with the Gates Cambridge program.

A (non-academic) reference to their match using Gates Cambridge

The Gates Cambridge benchmark is utilized in precisely the exact same manner as the announcement – to decrease the significant number of well-qualified applicants to people who best fit the Gates Cambridge standards.

Referees may paste/type up to 4,000 characters into the online reference or upload another letter; they’re also asked some specific questions regarding how they rate the applicant to the scholarship.

Your referee ought to be a person of proper standing who’s equipped to answer the query with authority and that will and completely comprehend the Gates Cambridge standards. Applicants frequently ask professors (who can comment on their fit with Gates Cambridge, not merely offer you a third academic reference), employers, senior figures in voluntary organisations for whom they’ve worked along with others that will comment on their suitability for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship. Applicants shouldn’t ask family, friends or people unqualified to deliver a useful and proper reference.

The Gates Cambridge reference is in addition to the two academic references required by the University for admission.

Other materials:

All candidates must submit a current CV/resume.

For PhD candidate, just a research proposal is also required – if it’s not yet submitted as part of this application for the course. Where there are specific advice from the department about word format and length of the research proposal applicants must stick to this. If you’re a PhD candidate, however, your department doesn’t need a research proposal then you need to submit a document of about two pages representing your research plans to be considered for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship.
