BIO-Europe 2017 to Bring Together 3,800 Life Science Leaders in Berlin

To those who know Berlin as a creative hub, it might come as a surprise that life science is one of the city’s industrial pillars. The city is, in fact, a creative crossroad not just for arts but also life science. A variety of players in academia, industry and startups make the ecosystem blossom.

Berlin’s success in biotech and digital health can be traced back to its multi-variety of life sciences institutions. Not only can one find research establishments, universities and ‘Big Pharma’, but many startups are based here too.

The German capital region is home to more than 500companies in biotech, pharma and medtech, as well as 35 large research institutions focused on life sciences and around 130 hospitals. Above all, one of Europe’s largest and most renowned university hospitals, Charité, calls the city home.

And now, the BIO-Europe 2017 being hosted at Berlin is bringing together hundreds of delegates representing the global biotech industry come together to share their expertise.

Berlin will be hosting the get-together of sorts with support from Berlin Partner and the regional Cluster for Healthcare Industry and Life Sciences HealthCapital which will showcase its activities to international guests and also work to bring regional

actors together with decision makers from across Germany and abroad.

The Berlin Science Week 2017, an international gathering that brings people from the world’s most innovative scientific institutions together in Berlin, taking place November 1-10 with events all over the city.

Leaders in the life sciences will meet at BIO-Europe to develop partnerships that propel global drug development. High-level executives from pharma, biotech, the investment sector and patient groups are confirmed to attend, and will lead program panels and discussions relevant to the industry.

The cluster’s agenda will focus on support for internationalization, regional excellence and future-oriented innovation. Carolin Clement, Head of Biotech and Pharma at Berlin Partner, explains, “It is part of our duties to inform about the life science region Berlin-Brandenburg on an international level, and to initiate foundings and enable cooperation,” she says. “Exhibitions and congresses, like the BIO-Europe present the ideal platform. Especially when they take place just outside our door.

Among our tasks are highlighting the life sciences region on an international level and facilitating the creation of new companies and cooperative activities. Tradeshows and congresses like BIO-Europe offer the ideal platform to do just that. We provide custom-made location tours and information to all guests and our in-depth knowledge of the region’s major business and science stakeholders, infrastructure and commercial sites makes it possible for us to generate the right contacts for each respective need“, she says.

Today, digitization is the theme driving many of these companies: “In the future, big data will be essential to the life sciences. The challenge will be to derive new knowledge from this multiplicity of complex data, for example in cancer research and in the field of personalized medicine,” notes Dr. Kai Uwe Bindseil, manager of the HealthCapital cluster. Here, the emphasis is placed on first-class R&D facilities such the Berlin Institute of Health (BIH), which focuses on translational research and precision medicine.

BIO-Europe will no doubt generate considerable attention for Berlin among the global community of experts before, during and after the conference. Also, the opportunity for international guests to personally acquaint themselves with the capital as a leading location for the biotech and pharma industry is unique.
