PhD Admission Notification – 2017 @ CSIR – Institute of Microbial Technology | Walk-In Interview

IMTECH is a multidisciplinary institute with excellent research facilities, state of the art computational and library facilities, and faculty with interests in many different areas of modern biology and biotechnology (please visit our website http://www.imtech.res.in for information on different areas and faculty activities). Further details will be available to those appearing for the walk-in interview(s), which will be conducted, for each candidate, subject to the fulfillment of the required essential qualifications. The major thrust areas of the institute are Antibiotic drug discovery, Virology, Microbiome and Biopharmaceuticals. During this intake, openings may be available in the above areas which involves the following:
(a) Molecular Biology: Molecular biology of pathogens, gene silencing, stress tolerance, signal transduction, gene expression, genome-wide analysis
(b) Cell Biology & Immunology: Host- pathogen interactions, protein trafficking
(c) Protein Science & Engineering: Structure-function relationships, design, folding, engineering, stability, expression, structural analysis and modeling, crystallization, structure determination of proteins and structure- based drug designing etc.
(d) Applied & Environmental Microbiology: Microbial diversity, environmental biotechnology, biotransformations, extremophiles and their metabolites
(e) Bioinformatics: Computer-aided vaccine and drug development, genome annotations, protein structure prediction, molecular simulations
(f) Medicinal Chemistry: Design and synthesis of small molecules and analogs, natural product synthesis and their designed analogs, natural product delivery, discovery of new synthetic strategies and technologies
(g) Biochemical Engineering: Fermentation & downstream processing, process development and optimization, scale up
(h) Biosensors & Bionanotechnology: Nanobio approaches for immunodiagnostics of clinically important disease biomarkers based on bioprobe electronic interfacing.
Eligibility and Selection
Candidates with Master’s Degree with minimum 55% marks in aggregate (50% marks in case of SC/ST/Differently-abled candidates) or equivalent in any branch of science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Pharmacy) or in chemical/biochemical engineering and have qualified for obtaining research fellowship after passing CSIR/UGC NET or DBT JRF examination (‘A’ Category) or DST INSPIRE Fellowship or ICMR JRF examination are eligible to be interviewed.
Please note that valid proofs of having passed the masters’ level (or those awaiting for their final results) and fellowship examinations (with valid fellowship) are mandatory for being eligible to be interviewed. Those coming for interview must be prepared to be present in Chandigarh for three days, which is the approximate time required to finalize the admission of successful candidates.
No TA/DA or any other expenses will be paid for appearing in the interview. Candidates must also state their present occupation, if any, before the interview; any concealment may result in cancellation of admission at any stage.
Age limit & relaxation: minimum 19 years & maximum 28 years (upper age relaxation is applicable to SC/ST/OBC/PH/VH/Female candidates as per Govt. of India rules). The decision of the Director, IMTECH, regarding selection/admission of the candidates shall be final.
Residential Accommodation : Separate hostel accommodation for boys and girls in the campus may be provided to admitted candidates on request and as per availability.
How to Apply :
Director, Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), invites exceptionally motivated candidates to appear for a walk-in interview on May 29th, 2017 (Monday), (Reporting time 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon) for pursuing doctoral research at IMTECH under the aegis of the Ph.D. degree program being jointly run by IMTECH and the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. The candidates who have passed M.Sc. with minimum 55% marks in aggregate (50% marks in case of SC/ST/Differently-abled candidates) and cleared any of the following examination (with valid fellowship) are eligible to attend the interview.
Kindly note that those candidates who are waiting for M.Sc. results may also appear for the interview but their joining is subject to clearing all the eligibility criteria:
(a) CSIR-UGC NET (NET-LS not eligible)
(b) DBT-JRF examination (‘A’ Category only)
(c) DST INSPIRE Fellowship
(d) ICMR-JRF examination (those selected for working only in ICMR Projects are not eligible).
Please bring 2 copies of attested photograph and 2 original copies of filled-in form in the prescribed format (may be downloaded from our website). In addition prepare and attach a brief research proposal with the following information (i) Title of the proposal (ii) Introduction to the problem (iii) Lack of existing knowledge (iv) Proposed strategies to solve the problem (v) a short schematic presentation on the proposal (vi) Candidate’s name. Kindly also bring original and attested copies of (a) All certificates (school leaving, B.Sc., M.Sc., etc.), (b) Proof of passing NET or other Junior Research Fellowship Examination (a copy of certificate or roll number along with newspaper clipping showing result with roll number should be highlighted).
Selection:
All candidates fulfilling minimum eligibility criteria may appear for walk-in interview at CSIR-IMTECH, Chandigarh, on 29th May, 2017 at 09:00 AM. There will be two rounds of interviews. The first round will be aimed at assessing the candidate’s ability for comprehension, critical analysis and logical reasoning and aptitude for scientific research. Short listed candidates in the first round of interview on 30th May 2017. In the second interview, the candidates will be evaluated with special focus on their research proposal that they have to submit along with their application. The candidates should be ready to make a short 10 minute presentation based on their research proposal . Result of the selected candidates will be declared on 31st May 2017.
THOSE WHO ARE SELECTED WILL BE ASSIGNED LABS AND WILL BE REQUIRED TO PAY Rs.3000/- IN CASH (Non-refundable) TOWARDS ENROLLMENT WHICH WILL BE IMMEDIATELY DONE AFTER SELECTION. All the selected candidates will be joining CSIR-IMTECH on 03rd July, 2017 for their Pre-PhD course work which will run about six months. Those who successfully clear the Pre-PhD exam will be assigned labs after their interaction with faculty.
