Direct Admission to the THSTI-JNU PhD program for winter semester 2016-17

For candidates with medical, life sciences (including biomedical, health, pharmaceutical, nutritional science, public health), veterinary science, engineering, or mathematics background

Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) is a part of the inter-disciplinary Biotech Science Cluster at Faridabad in the National Capital Region. THSTI is designed to be a dynamic and interactive organization with a mission to conduct innovative translational research across disciplines and professions to accelerate the development of concepts into tangible products to improve human health. THSTI is a recognized R&D institute of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi to offer doctoral program.

Applications are invited for the direct admission to THSTI-JNU PhD program during winter semester, 2016-2017. This programme is to encourage medical graduates with interest in basic sciences/or experienced science graduates willing to pursue research as a career in the areas of molecular medicine.

The broad domains of ongoing research at THSTI are:

• biology of infectious diseases such as dengue, Japanese encephalitis, hepatitis E and tuberculosis, vaccine and anti-viral development
• Physiology of nutrition and the developing immune system, immune responses in pregnancy and childhood
• Clinical research and epidemiology focused on maternal and child health
• Auto-immune diseases, infection and inflammation
• Understanding disease through the human microbiome
• In vitro diagnostics
• Therapeutics
• Platform technologies: Phage display, Recombinant protein production platforms.
• medical devices and implants
• mathematical modelling to understand biological problems
• biology of metabolic syndrome and disease progression dynamics

Students selected for the program are required to undergo a pre-PhD course work followed by the submission of a research thesis. This PhD program is governed by the JNU rules.

Eligibility:

Only those candidates shall be considered for Direct Admission to the Ph.D. programme, who
have either—

(a) Obtained MBBS or BVSc degree (during 2010 or later) from a recognized
University/Institution with one year experience or obtained MD /MVSc. degree/M.Pharm
(during 2011 or later; experience is not essential).

OR

(b) Obtained 2 years M.Phil degree from a recognized University/Institution with FGPA 6 or
equivalent (with dissertation/seminar/Viva).

OR

(c) at least two years research experience after Master’s degree in reputed institutions with
one first authored research publication in peer-reviewed journals (included PubMed; NOT
review articles or popular articles or papers in the proceedings). In addition, they should
have obtained Master’s Degree with FGPA 6.0 in 10 point scale or comparable standard
where the grading is based on system other than 10 point scale.

(d) The institute reserves the right to adopt additional criteria for shortlisting of the
applications.

Selection procedure: Applicants fulfilling the above essential criteria and having their own
fellowship and those shortlisted based on the above mentioned eligibility criteria will be invited for the interview. Based on their performance in the interview and taking into consideration their overall experience and research work, selected candidates shall interact with potential PhD supervisors and provide their choice of supervisors. Final allotment of supervisors shall be made based on choices exercised by both the students and the supervisors.

Fellowship: Only students with their own fellowship for direct admission to the PhD program will be considered.

No. of seats: A total of 6 candidates may be selected, if found suitable. The number of total
seats for the direct PhD program has been restricted to 20% of the total intake of 30 seats
which may decrease as per the actual requirement at the time of selection.

Reservations: 27% seats for OBC (non-creamy layer) (2 seats), 15% of seats for SC (1 seat) are reserved for candidates belonging to these categories. These category of candidates are required to submit certificate in respect of their claims from the authorized officers as notified by the Government for the purpose from time to time. Candidates belonging to the reserved category who are selected on their own merit with General Category candidates shall not be counted under reserved quota.

Academic program: Generally there is no course work for direct PhD program. However,
depending upon the individual cases the academic committee of the concerned centre/institute may prescribe some courses either as credit courses or audit courses. If a course work is prescribed as credit courses for direct PhD students, he/she needs to secure a CGPA as required as per JNU rules in course work for confirmation to direct PhD program. Upon selection of the candidate to direct PhD Program and completion of the course work, wherever required, the THSTI-JNU Academic Committee shall forward its recommendations to JNU for registration and to allow continue research towards their PhD thesis. For the award of the doctoral degree, candidates will have to complete all requirements as per the JNU rules.

Fees: Admission fees, annual fees, registration fees or any other fees levied by JNU shall be
payable by the student.

Hostel: Depending on the availability selected students will have the option of shared hostel
accommodation in lieu of their HRA.

Application procedure: Candidates fulfilling the above requirements may apply online. Please take a print out of the application, sign it and send it to the Head-Administration of the institute at the above address along with the application fee and self-attested copies of documents in support of qualification so as to reach latest by 21st November 2016. Candidates in government employment are required to send their application through proper channel or produce NOC at the time of interview. Applications received after the closing date will not be entertained on any ground including postal delay. Incomplete applications in any respect will be summarily rejected and no correspondence in this regard will be entertained.

Application fee: Non-refundable application fee of Rs. 500 for General and OBC candidates, and Rs. 250 for SC/ST/PWD candidates should be paid by bank draft in favor of Translational Health Science and Technology Institute payable at Gurgaon.
