NIRF Ranks IIT Hyderabad 7th Best in India

The Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) has been ranked No. 7 among various research and teaching institutes in the country in the India Rankings-2016 by National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of Human Resource Development. It has naturally boosted the morale of its faculty and students and the institute will focus more on research and development (R&D).

The ranking was announced in New Delhi at a function. The India Rankings-2016 is the first-of-its-kind indigenous ranking framework for higher education institutions in India. The first set of the awards were presented by Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani.

About 80 per cent of our faculty are involved in R&D and we have developed that as a culture among our faculty and students. This is being taken up in relevant areas like 5G, digital fabrication, biotechnology and core chemical engineering. A lot of innovations are taking place at our institute and many are working on cutting-edge technologies,” said U.B. Desai, Director, IIT-H.

Stating that the credit for the institute getting such a ranking goes to students and faculty for their contribution in innovation and research, Prof. Desai said adding that they were

happy to receive this award from the HRD Ministry.

We have been ranked 7th, which is the highest among all new IITs. It is really an honour to be recognised and awarded for the work being done at the institute. We certainly would like to do better in the coming years,” he said.
