About the Role
Nature Communications is seeking an Interim Associate or Senior Editor with expertise in:
- Biocatalysis
- Enzyme Engineering
- Chemoenzymatic Synthesis
- Computational Chemistry Applied to Biological Systems
- Related disciplines at the chemistry–biology interface
The successful candidate will possess strong scientific judgment, broad research interests, excellent communication skills, and the ability to critically evaluate cutting-edge research.
This role is particularly suited to researchers who enjoy science beyond laboratory work and are motivated by engaging with diverse scientific disciplines, evaluating emerging discoveries, and shaping the scientific literature.
Key Responsibilities
Editorial Management
- Handle original research manuscripts.
- Oversee the peer-review process.
- Work closely with fellow editors throughout all stages of manuscript evaluation and selection.
Scientific Assessment
- Critically evaluate submitted research for: Novelty, Scientific rigor, Context, Potential impact
- Make balanced and well-reasoned editorial decisions based on expert reviewer feedback.
Journal Development
- Determine subject representation within the journal.
- Help shape the journal’s coverage in chemical biology and related disciplines.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
- Collaborate extensively with editors across Nature Portfolio.
- Build relationships with researchers and experts within the global scientific community.
- Attend scientific conferences and visit research institutions.
Essential Qualifications
Educational Qualification
- PhD (or equivalent) in: Biocatalysis, Enzyme Engineering, Chemoenzymatic Synthesis, Computational Chemistry Applied to Biological Systems, Related Chemistry–Biology Interface Disciplines
Technical & Scientific Expertise
- Strong understanding of: Chemical Biology, Biocatalysis, Enzyme-based technologies, Related interdisciplinary research areas
Core Competencies
- Ability to critically assess scientific research.
- Strong understanding of research novelty, significance, and impact.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
- Broad interest in scientific research beyond a primary specialization.
- Ability to rapidly learn and evaluate emerging research fields.
- Strong interpersonal and collaborative skills.
- Willingness to travel and engage with researchers internationally.
Desirable Qualifications
- Postdoctoral or equivalent research experience.
- Prior editorial experience (not required).
- Significant editorial experience may qualify candidates for appointment at the Senior Editor level.
Full editorial training will be provided for candidates without previous editorial experience.
