About the Institute
BRIC–Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Biotechnology (RGCB) is a premier research institute under the Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council (BRIC), Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. The institute focuses on advanced research in disease biology, exploring cellular and molecular mechanisms affecting humans, animals, and plants.
The PhD program is affiliated with the Regional Centre for Biotechnology (RCB), an Institution of National Importance established under DBT with international collaboration.

Program Overview
Applications are invited from eligible Indian candidates for admission to the PhD program for the academic year 2026–2027. The program will commence in August 2026 and involves advanced research training across multiple domains of biotechnology and life sciences.

Eligibility Criteria
Candidates must fulfill the following requirements:
- Postgraduate degree with minimum 60% marks
- 4-year Bachelor’s degree with minimum 75% marks
Relevant disciplines include: Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Chemistry, Agricultural, Environmental, Veterinary, Pharmaceutical, or Medical Sciences
Must hold a valid national-level JRF fellowship (UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DBT or equivalent)
Age Limit: Maximum 28 years (as of application deadline)
Relaxation:
- SC/ST/PwD/Women: 5 years
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): 3 years
- Candidates awaiting final results are eligible, provided they meet criteria at the time of admission
Selection Process
The selection process consists of three stages:
Level 1: Preliminary Assessment
Evaluation of research aptitude, motivation, and overall suitability
Level 2: Subject Knowledge Evaluation
Assessment of academic knowledge and domain expertise
Level 3: Laboratory Rotation
Interaction with faculty and lab exposure
Shortlisted outstation candidates will receive accommodation during this phase
Application Process
- Applications must be submitted online only
- Application Fee: ₹500 (Non-refundable)
- Fee exemption for SC/ST/EWS/PwD candidates (with valid certificate)
- Payment to be made via SBI Collect
Program Fees
- ₹5,000 per semester (first 10 semesters)
- ₹10,000 per semester (subsequent semesters)
- Additional ₹5,000 per semester payable to RCB
Fellowship
As per norms of funding agencies (UGC/CSIR/ICMR/DBT), subject to revisions
