Danish pharma giant Novo Nordisk is increasing the use of AI in Drug Discovery and Development to handle these tasks effectively. According to scientists and company executives, the technology is already helping to frame regulatory paperwork, study safety reports, and support commercial planning for drugs/medicines still under development and for products already on the market. 

The company says AI has helped reduce the time between the end of clinical trials and regulatory submissions by nearly two-thirds. This is the reason most pharmaceutical companies are betting on AI and trying to get more funding to improve the infra. Not only expansion, but it means a lot for the patients waiting for that “one drug” to cure their condition. 

Novo Nordisk Bengaluru as the Emerging Hub

India’s role in this transformation is remarkable. Bengaluru’s Novo Nordisk office branch is now deeply involved in preparing medicines for launch across global markets. 

“There’s no medicine that goes into market without having Bengaluru’s Thumbprint”, quotes John Dawber, managing director of global business services. 

The company’s executives said that the large share of the work linked to international product launches is already being carried out from the India center. Reports claim that the Bengaluru team contributed extensively, including the recent launch of the oral obesity medicine in the US. This underscores India’s growing responsibilities, not just as a branch but as a functional center.

Competition in the Obesity Market

Novo Nordisk is known for its treatments for obesity and diabetes. While other competitors, such as Eli Lilly, are successfully launching new medicines and expanding their presence, the company is under pressure. This fuels the company’s investment in and development of AI in the drug discovery sector.

Plans for Hiring are Becoming More Selective

Novo Nordisk has no plans for a significant increase in hiring while continuing to expand its AI operations. The company reported that it expects its global business services workforce to be about 4,000 employees by the end of the current fiscal year (compared to previous estimates, which were higher).

According to Company Executives, this shift in hiring from a large to a selective workforce will continue, with hiring for specialist roles that support AI-based systems and enable scalable operational improvements in efficiency at lower operating costs, as well as faster drug launches.

Indication of the Digital Future of Pharma

Novo Nordisk’s most recent action is indicative of a growing trend across the drug manufacturing industry toward the digitalization of processes used to develop new and improved medicines, as well as to launch existing medicines in their current form. 

The increasing use of AI technology in healthcare, regulatory science, data analysis, and pharmaceutical technology will provide additional opportunities in India. As companies continue to use AI methods to link research and development for pharmaceuticals and connected digital tools, the role of India will continue to expand internationally within the scope of global healthcare innovation.
