Laboratory Assistant (Dept. of Biological Sciences, IISER Kolkata)

A position for laboratory assistant is available in research group of Dr. Arnab Gupta, Associate Professor, Dept. of Biological Sciences, IISER Kolkata. The work involves cell culture maintenance, designing experiments and management of laboratory resources. Further, the candidate will have to make buffers for cell biology and biochemistry experiments. He/she will have to conduct basic to advance experiments relevant to cell biology and biochemical studies.

Name of the Project: Understanding the trafficking regulation of human copper ATPases

Principal Investigator: Dr. Arnab Gupta, Associate Professor, Dept. of Biological Sciences of funds.

Funding Agency: SERB, DST (CRG/2021/002150)

Tenure: 12 months, with possibility of renewal upon satisfactory performance

Age limit: Not more than 28 years as of the day of interview

Basic Eligibility Criteria: Undergraduate (Bachelor’s Degree in any field of Biological Sciences) with experience in animal cell culture, basic microbiology and advanced biochemistry

Additional Experience (Desirable): Master’s Degree in any area of Biological Sciences with experience in confocal microscopy and sample preparation, CRISPR/Cas9 technology and molecular cloning.

Remuneration: Rs. 20,000 + 24% HRA (as per SERB rules)

Answer: I find the study of trafficking regulation of human copper ATPases fascinating as it plays a crucial role in maintaining cellular copper homeostasis, which is essential for various cellular processes. I am familiar with the basics of copper transport mechanisms and look forward to exploring the intricacies of copper ATPase trafficking in this project.
  3. As a Laboratory Assistant, you will be responsible for designing experiments and managing laboratory resources. Can you share an example of a project or experiment you designed during your previous experience? Answer: In my previous laboratory experience, I had the opportunity to design and conduct an experiment to investigate the effects of different growth factors on cell proliferation. I planned the experimental setup, optimized the culture conditions, and analyzed the results to draw meaningful conclusions.
  4. The role also involves making buffers for cell biology and biochemistry experiments. How do you ensure accuracy and consistency in preparing these buffers? Answer: To ensure accuracy and consistency in preparing buffers, I follow standardized protocols and use precise measuring equipment. I double-check the calculations, maintain detailed records of the buffer compositions, and perform pH checks before using them in experiments.
  5. The project mentions additional desirable experience in confocal microscopy, CRISPR/Cas9 technology, and molecular cloning. Do you have any exposure to these techniques, and if not, how eager are you to learn and incorporate them into your skillset? Answer: While I haven’t had direct exposure to confocal microscopy, CRISPR/Cas9 technology, and molecular cloning during my undergraduate studies, I am genuinely eager to learn and acquire these skills. I believe that mastering these techniques will greatly enhance my abilities as a Laboratory Assistant and contribute to the success of the research project.
