Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria
  • Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures
  • Monitor, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality
  • Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving.
  • Prepare, test and evaluate new reagents or controls
  • Report accurate and timely test results in order to deliver quality patient care
  • Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures
  • Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary
  • Assist with processing of specimens when needed
  • Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science or other life science with completion of at least a 12-month training program in Medical Technology. Or Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical or biological science from an accredited college or university and one-year training and/or experience in the specialty in which testing is to be performed. Such training must be equivalent to that received in a school of Medical Technology.
  • Meet local regulatory (CLIA & State) requirements
  • Previous Generalist experience including Chemistry, Hematology, Microbiology and Urinalysis preferred
  • ASCP or AMT certification is preferred
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment
  • Proficient with computers; Familiarity with laboratory information systems are a plus
  • High level of attention detail along with strong communication and organizational skills
  • Must be able to pass a standardized color vision screen
  • Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
  • Proficiency in English language

I also perform routine quality control procedures, participate in proficiency testing programs, and document all laboratory procedures and results accurately and timely.
  3. How do you manage your workload and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced laboratory environment?
    Answer: In a fast-paced laboratory environment, I prioritize my tasks based on the urgency of each test and follow the laboratory’s established policies and procedures. I also communicate effectively with my colleagues and supervisors, monitor and organize my work to meet the turnaround time for test results, and take proactive steps to troubleshoot any technical problems that may arise.
  4. What is your experience with laboratory information systems and computer proficiency?
    Answer: I have experience working with laboratory information systems such as Sunquest, SoftLab, and Meditech, and I am proficient in using Microsoft Office Suite and other computer software programs. I have also used laboratory information systems to enter patient and specimen data, track test results, and generate reports.
  5. How do you maintain a safe work environment and comply with personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements?
    Answer: To maintain a safe work environment, I strictly follow the laboratory’s policies and procedures for handling potentially infectious materials and hazardous chemicals. I wear appropriate PPE such as gloves, lab coats, face shields, and respirators when necessary and dispose of used materials properly. I also regularly participate in safety training sessions and report any unsafe conditions or incidents to my supervisor.
