IISc Will Offer Medical Science Programs From Next Year

Students seeking to continue in the medical sciences field can now join one of the most renowned institutes in India. IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Bengaluru, declared on 6th October 2021 that it would begin offering medical courses from the year 2022

Govindan Rangarajan, Director of IISc, discussed the history of the institute during a virtual convocation held on 6th October 2021. IISc was founded in the year 1909 along with the establishment of their general chemistry division. It was soon followed by organic chemistry and electrical technology divisions. He added that despite the name of the institute, they have represented both engineering and science equally right from the start. Many interdisciplinary divisions were formed 12 years ago. From 2022, they are planning for another significant change. After around 100 years of success in engineering & science, they are planning to begin a medical school for postgraduate students on campus.

Ramesh Pkhriyal, the then Union Minister of Education along with the directors of NITs, IISERs, IIITs, IITs, and IISc in a meetin

g declared that as per the National Educational Policy 2020, IIT Kharagpur & IISc would soon begin offering programs in medical sciences.

On the other hand, around 110 medals were presented to students for their excellent academic performance. Since the establishment of the institute, over 20,000 students have graduated. The institute offers a 4-year BSc (Research) program, many master’s programs (MMgmt, MDes, Mtech (Res), Mtech), Integrated Ph.D. programs, and Ph.D.

Quantum computing

Prof. Rangarajan stated that while aiming for research expansion, besides cyber security, biomedical devices & systems, and data science & brain computation, IISc was entering into the latest arena of quantum computing which is increasingly gaining attention for upcoming technological growth. He mentioned that there is one more field where they intend to venture into. They are going to begin Kotak-IISc AI-ML Centre in a new building on campus. Backed by Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd., the centre will concentrate on innovative research and creative education on financial technology, ML, and AI solutions.
